We travelled to Prague from Heathrow vis British Airways using Avios (old Airmiles) and got a brilliant deal. We arrived in Prague to find out Taxi, booked as part of our deal with Avios with Prague Airport taxis, waiting for us on arrival. It only cost us £17 each way and was really worth it as it took over an hour to get to the hotel on Friday but 20 mins on the way back on Sunday. The hotel is very central and well presented. I only comment is that we asked on 3 different occassions to see the Ballroom (the most famous part of the hotel) and were fobbed off. We never did see it! Other than that the room was comfortable and the breakfast great.
Now onto the beware bit. Being a canny traveller we had read all the info of what to beware of and still got caught out. First we went off the main road in Lesser town for meal and ended up paying nearly £40 for a lunchtime meal and drink!. Our drinks came £14! and we were charged £6 for pretzels we did not eat and bread we did not ask for . Bit of advice do not eat in a really popular areas and check the drinks prices as well as the food prices before you order.
The rip off that hurt the most was on our final day when I wanted to change some £ to Czeck money and the bureau to change showed 30 to £ . I handed over my £50 and only got the equivalent of 21 to £. When I asked why a very rude woman said it was because the higher rate was only for higher sums of money changed. It did not state anywhere what the higher amount was! When I said I did not want to continue with the transaction I was more of less told - hard luck. So the lesson learnt is always ask what the exchange rate is for the amount you are going to change up before you hand over your money. Believe it or not the rate was 20% better at the hotel!
All the moaning out the way - Prague if a fantastic place. If you want to save you feel from the cobbles jump on the Hop on Hop off bus. It cost bout £25 for a 48 hour pass and this includes a guided trip around the castle - a must. It is a really good way of getting around and jumping off to discover a new area. You can get really good and cheap meals and drinks less than 10 minutes walk from the centre.
Have fun on your trip.
