We had a one month retreat at Dunagiri with about seventeen participants. It was one of the most peaceful experiences of my life.

Please don't expect the luxuries of a five star resort. It's a simple place designed for those seeking a genuine, comfortable, friendly and down to earth atmosphere for a retreat.

Here is a note I wrote for Piyush (the owner) while I was there...

Dear Piyush,

I am grateful to you for creating this space. It is a magical, healing and liberating place. The whole environment is perfect for Sadhana and deepening. Thank you for being such a powerful channel of blessings for so many others through your patient and diligent efforts to make such a place a reality.

Thank you and lots of love,

Nithya Shanti

This is a place you should go to if you literally want to 'get away from it all'.....no TV, virtually no internet, erratic cell phone coverage, no Malls or markets, no town...yes it is in the middle of nowhere! Nor is it some fancy shmancy resort (note it's called Retreat, not a Resort) --it's pretty basic. Yes you have your decent beds and linen etc but if you come in the monsoon you may not be able to get a change of towels and sheets daily because there's no sunshine to dry the clothes and there certainly aren't any dryers or washing machines, in fact electricity supply is, well, not bad, but it's there when it's there, that's all you'll get. The rooms are nice enough, mostly old village houses converted into rooms, some have better views, the one I stayed in had windows in place of one wall and I loved the open feeling; some rooms have low or sloping roofs so you have to watch your head when you go to the bathroom or at the corners. The rooms are spread over the fairly large property so there's a walk (a few minutes but if you're health is compromised or you have bad knees -you might be just a trifle upset-) and it's on the side of a hill or mountain really there is a fair amount of going up and down from one location to the other, say, the meditation hall -made as a pyramid, the dining room, other rooms, in and out of the property.
The food is more like home cooked than from a hotel but the best part is that they are pretty accommodative if you have any special needs- say if you are vegetarian, vegan or eating oil free etc.
There are places you can hike to --from a 20 minute walk to a few hours and a small town 30-40 minutes drive away. Some temples and of course the famous Kriya Babaji's cave to which people are drawn from all over the world I'm told.
The best part is being totally in the lap of nature and far away from the pollution and hustle bustle of city life. I was just there in the monsoon this time and I loved the downpours. Took a hold of my umbrella and rubber slippers, turned my trousers up and splashed through the water. the grasses and loved watching the flowers beginning to blossom and the potato crop grow. Another visit I was there in February I think and it was much dryer and not anywhere near as green as this time so it depends on the season when you go. There were a few spiders in my room and I came across a couple of scorpions here and there but I left them alone and they left me alone? Of course the boys who work there can easily take them out for you so there's no problem like that.
Enough said!

Room tip: Rooms on the highest level have the best view, one on almost same level as main hall is also good, all are OK really.

Dunagiri is a special place indeed. The experience will stay in my heart forever. It really is a trip of a lifetime and far surpassed my expectations in every way. I hope and pray I'll be able to return one day!
Coming from the UK & after a long trip the welcoming hospitality we received was amazing. Piyush and Katy are simply beautiful people with warm, open hearts who care so much for the local area what they are doing here is amazing! Please keep doing it! Giving back to the local village via employment and giving us peace and serenity in the process... it's a small utopia in India.
The retreat operates as a sustainable sharing economy which works on many levels! Dunagiri is stunning with the most serene views, flowers, birds & butterflies everywhere, mother nature at her absolute finest! The facilities are rustic & beautiful, I loved the bucket baths, I thought I might not, but they were nicer than a shower! The food is amazing - vegetarian, fresh local ingredients, the water fresh and pure - I feel like I've had a nourishing detox! Everything you could want and so much more.
Yoga was either outside with a view of the snowcapped peaks of the Himalayas or in the purpose built huge pyramid which was lit beautifully to become a small glowing pod in the evenings.
Our carefully planned trips to temples, ashrams and to spiritual sites made it super special - meeting local villagers who invited us into their homes with warmth and laughter, visiting the local school, meditating at the site of Babaji's cave & meeting a yogi were real hi-lights as well as the gorgeous litter of Himalayan Mastiff puppies that were born during our stay.
It's hard to put into words how grateful I feel to have experienced this magical retreat, it's like a tonic for the soul, I haven't felt as alive, happy and free for a long time (if ever!) I would recommend everyone to go there as medicine or therapy, problems or stress seem to dissolve within hours of arriving!
From the bottom of my heart thank you for such an amazing experience and I will try and spread the word about the wonderful work you do and carry the Dunagiri message in to my own life! Love and peace x

Room tip: I had a room next to the kitchen on ground level in the main house, which was wonderful, amazing views and totally private.

Retreat is a beautiful word when applied to Dunagiri. It is a place where you are nourished with beautiful food, carefully and lovingly prepared, stunning scenery, and a level of hospitality beyond anything I have ever experienced. My senses were reeling with joy. I feel humbled and amazed by my stay. I truly cannot fully express how wonderful it was. I went on a yoga holiday with Yoga Kula Leeds and I can only say that it was totally brilliant.

Went to Dunagiri Retreat as part of an organised Yoga retreat. Spent ten days here and could have stayed longer! Tranquil setting, delicious organic food and a wonderful host, Piyush. I stayed in a room at the top with an amazing view of the mountains and sunrise. Each day could be spent hiking, visiting temples, markets or simply staying amongst the beautiful cosmos in the peaceful silence of the retreat. Piyush puts money back into the community and deeply cares about the local people and the area. I don't usually go back somewhere twice, with the idea to experience somewhere new, but this place is an exception. Thank you Piyush, Katy and all of the staff for making it a wonderful time and memory!

Dunagiri Retreat is without a doubt one of the most beautiful places I've ever been to. As a group of 12 we travelled from Yoga Kula Leeds, UK and held our Yoga retreat there. As one of the organisers I had to keep pinching myself.. I knew it was going to be good, as Dunagiri had come highly recommended to me, but I didn't realise it would be as absolutely beautiful in every way as it was. Piyush has created an visionary retreat for people to experience India -from the inside. His thoughtfulness and care for every aspect of our retreat was incredible and much appreciated. Everyone at Dunagiri has made our trip so special, our experience will remain one of happiest times of my life because of the people we met.. the delicious, fresh food that we ate - thanks to Panditji! The mesmerising views that our eyes feasted on.. the beautiful and stylish rooms that we stayed in that made it feel like home whilst we were there.. the day trips that we experienced - such a wonderful itinerary, thanks Piyush and Katie & I can't forget the laughter, so much fun!
With an open heart after an unforgettable experience.. our retreat was better than I could have ever imagined and we've already booked our next visit to Dunagiri in 2 years time!
