Fabulous location and food

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 3 weeks agovia mobile
What a fabulous location . We loved everything about our stay , the couple who run it and the staff are so nice , the chef is fabulous.
Our room was very comfortable and nicely furnished , the bathroom also
The hotel is cosy and nicely decorated it has a lot of charm
Included with our stay was a 5 course meal in the restaurant and this was fantastic , my main course of venison was cooked beautifully and the local cheeseboard was a nice touch.
A great wine list and whisky list
The breakfast was also very good with a good choice of hot plates alongside the continental options and nice fresh coffee.
A great stay and we’d both love to come back after a long two days of driving and dropping children off at universities this was a real treat

A truly wonderful trip to the lighthouse.
This place is a one off experience, not to be missed.
    Quaint, charming, cosy and homely.
The rooms are very clean and well equipped, however you would not visit for the rooms… the lighthouse comes alive at night, superb ambience, excellent service, some of the best food cooked to perfection. Nothing is too much trouble for the amazing chef and new owners.
The fingers of light are a ‘must see’ at night time.
Thank you for making our stay so magical once again.
    My happy place.

OUTSTANDING..my sister Donna and three friends booked to stay here. Again .Donna's has been visiting for over 27years and we were delighted to meet the new owners how welcoming we were made to feel. The chef (their son) well the food was the best food we all have ever had and that is no exaggeration! We stayed in the STEVENSON SUITES and it was perfect indeed. We could not believe that after a fabulous 5 course meal we were all excited to have a wonderful full Scottish Breakfast. The new owners are doing many updates to the buildings but it is perfect to us just the way it is that's the main attraction it's rugged it's old it's relaxing it's special its unique and that's what we came for we could stay in any designer posh spa hotel but we wanted an experience and we GOT IT splendidly too. THANKYOU again.for an evening to remember xxxx it's our family special secret haven x

Room tip: Don't look at the exterior paintwork......see beyond to the uniqueness..the natural beauty. The fingers of light from the top !

If I could only rate the view, then it would be 5 stars. However, this was a one star, expensive mistake! The primary problems were: heat out in most of “suite”, spider infestation, numerous upcharges, inconsistently welcoming, and filthy carpets/very worn furniture. We stayed for one night, traveling from Edinburgh via car and train. I knew that we would travel all day, so I added the dinner and breakfast “package” and booked the lighthouse suite. That suite is in an out building, but was perfect for our family group of three. Upon checkout, despite the outbuilding having two bedrooms, and three total beds, my husband and I were charged 155.00 additional person charge (for our daughter). The 3rd person up charge isn’t uncommon, but steep, as “suite” already cost 370. There were many upcharges at our dinner as well. I understood the charge for wine, but for steak, a soft drink, and a coffee- so prepaid meal but only water to drink? The lighthouse dining room has a cozy aesthetic, but the food was almost inedible. We ate it, because we were starving, having traveled all day. And we were in an isolated location. The owners’ son is the “chef” and seemingly a nice guy, but overuses ground mustard and capers. The 5-course meal took 3 hours, as there were long waits between courses, despite restaurant being nearly empty. The owner admitted that he needed a part for our heater, in our bedroom, but provided no apology for only 1/3 of radiators working in our “suite”. It was very cold in the out building all night, with the exception of our daughter’s bedroom that was boiling hot. Two large spiders crawled out of bathtub drain and one fell out of my jacket sleeve, in the morning. It is a rural location, but exterminator needed in sleeping quarters. We declined breakfast, due to horrible dinner experience. The location is truly extraordinary- beautiful lighthouse, great walking paths, & fantastic photo opportunities. It is definitely worth the drive out to enjoy the view and walking trails- gorgeous! However, save yourself some money by avoiding the abysmal food and find other lodging!

Room tip: Drive out for the day, walk along the coastal paths, and enjoy the scenery of Scotland- just don’t spend the night or eat a meal here.

Just home from this place. So close to 100% perfect
If only they let the dogs stay with us in the lighthouse 😞
And a to be able to go up the light house (there are active plans to allow this)
Everything else, from the atmosphere, personal service and exquisite food was 100%
Thanks for looking after us and hope to come back xx

Yes, some paintwork might help, and yes, the rooms are not the largest. And cows can react annoyed when one tries to navigate the coast path. But this place is absolutely worthwhile visiting. Staying next to a working light house, amazing scenery, the ferries in the north channel. Staff very friendly, clean rooms, lovingly decorated. And most important: an amazing restaurant with fantastic food and an expertly selected wine list.
