Three friends and I have just returned from a wonderful week at Moulin Almond Cottage. The Property itself is large enough to comfortably house four people, yet cosy enough for a couple - especially with the log-burning stove roaring away in the living room.

While we loved the cottage itself, the real selling point are the grounds, about which we had total freedom to roam. Syd and Katie - two of the most hospitable holiday-home owners I have so far encountered, were kind enough to let us gamble about the garden like a group of excitable puppies. We were even given a personal tour down to see the deer at dusk.

I could not recommend it more.

“Nostalgic delight, beautiful scenery, essence of cottage living.”
Reviewed 10 January 2014 for a stay in January 2014

We wanted a place where our son could join us at the weekends and New Year's bank holidays but return to work in Aberdeen between times. Moulinalmond Cottage fulfilled this but supplied much more in the wonderful individuality of the cottage itself, the grounds and garden, the country round, and the whole experience. It brought back memories of staying at an aunt's cottage when I was a child. The wood-fired stove was a particular delight. We found the proprietors very friendly and helpful, and would definitely consider returning.

“In desperate need of a thorough clean & update.”
Reviewed 1 November 2013 for a stay in October 2013

Firstly let me start with the positives. Having spent many October half terms in Scotland in various locations, I can honestly say that this was one of the nicest locations we've stayed.
Unfortunately, this was the best thing about the place. On arrival we found the cottage to be unclean: the underside of the bin lid had mould growing on it, the microwave looked as if it hadn't been cleaned for an age, the main upstairs bedroom obviously has a serious damp problem as the smell & feel of damp pervaded everything, the bedroom was cold despite our lighting the log burner every night. The quality of the fittings is poor. The double mattress needs throwing out as it has a crater in the middle & the pillows are stained. There is only one wc & bath, between all guests. There isn't a shower; the bathroom doesn't have a window. I was ready to leave after one day, such was my disappointment.. It was interesting to read that a number of other guests had recorded similar comments re the general cleanliness & facilities of the cottage in the visitors' book long before our visit. I did speak with Katie (owner) the evening before our departure. Unfortunately she was away for most of our stay (we left a day earlier than paid for due to the above conditions). I expressed my disappointment & concerns to her. I said if it were a product I would return it to the place of purchase & request a refund. Yet we are purchasing a product, to all intents & purposes. The cottage is a 'for hire' product.
Katie did say she would see the issues are rectified. My concern is that this level of poor housekeeping hasn't happened overnight & the comments in the visitors' book back this up.
It's frustrating that WE are required to submit a deposit in case of breakages etc., BUT we the purchasers receive no such guarantee.

Management Response

We are astonished to find this very negative review on-line, especially when this client left with the words that she didn't want to write anything negative in our Visitor's Book, but then, astonishingly, proceeded to go on and write such a damning review ONLINE .
Frankly, that's astonishing….
We contest what she has written very strongly, and would point out the following:
Having looked through our visitor's book we find NO other comments about the cottage being dirty. Not one.
There are 3 comments in the past 13 years about 'shame you can't fit a shower into the 1840's building', but that's it.
And how does she explain our many repeat-bookings if her comments are valid?
The cottage is decidedly NOT damp, nor does/did it smell of damp. Nobody has EVER said that - indeed there are numerous comments about how warm and cosy it is!
Given it had been occupied, and kept warm and heated up until the very day they arrived, how could it possibly smell of damp?
FACT - it didn't.
The previous week's occupants have already said they wish to return - doesn't that say it all!?
As regards the bed, one recent visitor said they 'wished they could get the mattress in their car as it was so comfy'!!
Never had a complaint about it before..
On checking, yes I accept that one pillow (underneath the pillow protector and pillowslip )had a small stain on it. (Most people, however, don’t tend to strip the beds to check, but nonetheless, that has now been replaced).
The microwave and bin were cleaned before their arrival, as they always are, as is the entire cottage.
The fittings are regularly replaced and checked; we are checked by Visit Scotland regularly.
If these particular clients couldn’t keep the wood-burning stove stocked up with the free firewood overnight to ensure the cottage stays warm ( eh…. a first!), there are electrical heaters in every room. Why did they choose not to use those?
Or indeed, why not come to the door of the main house (a 2 minute walk away) and impart that information so that it could be rectified right away?
We do not advertise a shower, so why did she expect one?
What's the big deal about a bathroom having no window? It has an xpelair and is an internal bathroom. If she wants a bathroom with a window, why not ask if it has one before booking, if that's such an issue for her?
I am not the owner; my husband and I jointly own/run the cottage, and it's worth noting that, while I was away, through work. for most of their stay, my husband was here at night - every night - the entire time, and actually spoke to them during their stay and NO ISSUES WERE RAISED.
Why?
Also, if you're renting a self catering cottage is it normal to expect to see both owners on a daily basis?
A letter with my mobile (always on), my husband's mobile, AND our Housekeeper's mobile is left in the cottage as part of the welcome letter, so if there were any issues, why not call one of us and alert one of us to any issues?
As this client herself admitted to me (during her farewell ‘speech’, just before they drove off, after spending 6 days), she is apparently a ' Health & Safety Officer' and her husband often accuses of having OCD, and being OTT about cleanliness (her own words!).
I will leave it at that…..
