Great place to stay

Review of Matiatia Bay
5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 8 Aug 2018
What a really lovely place to stay, well appointed suites, unbelievable views across the bay and right to Auckland (great view at night). Very quiet and private unit, lovely bottle of wine on arrival just waiting for us. They go out of the way to make you feel welcome, snacks, nibbles and breakfast food as well . There was even a car to use while we stayed there. Will definateky go back there.

We booked this place based on their website and reviews. Suggestions of romantic and secluded were made. Based on what we paid this wasn't worth the price. Our main concern was the filth of the place. The carpets are dirty and need change. The bathroom walls had mildew suggesting no one had cleaned the place in ages. The bedsheets had marks in them, the sofa was so dirty neither me or my husband sat on it. It is by far the dirtiest place we have stayed in. We both wanted to leave as soon as we entered. But having paid we had no choice. For a place that isn't serviced there wasn't enough toilet paper or tea bags. The one good thing was that they had complimentary breakfast items such as bread and cheese etc. But never going back here.

If you're looking for a B&B where you wake up in the morning and the host has breakfast waiting for you or you need someone to make your bed and fold your towels, this isn't the place for you. However, if you are looking for a beautiful, relaxing, peaceful, and private get-away, this is what you want.
My husband and I were on our two-week honeymoon, and made this our last stop. We stayed for 3 nights, and we're so happy to say that we saved the best for last! Waiheke Island in and of itself is stunning, and everything the two of us wish we could have back home, but staying at Matiatia Bay allowed us to thoroughly enjoy everything the island has to offer.
The premises are conveniently located right by the ferry to Auckland. You don't even need to have a taxi take you there; my husband and I roughed it by dragging our heavy rollies up the dirt hill. Once there, there are only two guest suites, each of which has its own entrance, separate from the main house. We had the Pohutukawa Suite, which was clean, spacious, comfortable, and offered stunning views. Gary wasn't available to greet us, but there was a welcome note containing the key code to get in, and that worked just fine for us! Inside, there isn't a kitchen, but the mini-fridge was nicely stocked with everything we loved (it's like Gary knew us! Ham, cheese, pesto, parmesan crackers, muesli, yogurt, etc.), and there was a little cooker, which we used to cook up some freshly caught fish. My favorite part of the suite was the outside patio. It was perfect for enjoying a glass of wine overlooking Matiatia Bay, and it was so peaceful outside that I think I had some of my best sleep ever.
We spent everyday doing some walking hikes (there's are nice trails that start and finish right at the driveway), hitting the beaches, and even a little fishing. It is absolutely key to have access to Gary's cars. They're old driving machines, but they are the best way to tour the island. We used the cars everyday, and they were great for getting to the grocery store or going out for lunch or dinner.
We ended up meeting Gary while out in Onetangi. He's not the type of host who gets into your business, which my husband and I prefer, but he's friendly, generous, knowledgeable about the area, and he keeps Matiatia Bay in excellent shape. It would be our dream to return to Waiheke Island one day, and without a doubt, we'd choose Matiatia Bay again.
Gary - thank you for the best stay! Warmest regards, Sal and Melissa

Room tip: There are only two guest suites, and you can't go wrong with either one. We had the Pohutukawa Suite, and loved it!

Great location, close to ferry and vineyards. Warm, cosy with a hot tub bath, complimentary snacks, drinks and continental breakfast. Lovely view of the ocean and city skyline. Free use of two cars. Definitely visit again!

Just a 35 minute ferry ride ($36 return) from downtown Auckland will see you pulling into the Wharf in this beautiful bay, from here you can do costal walks "Te Ara Hura", jump onto the Hop on Hop off bus ($25) to see the island and the wineries or get a daily bus pass ($10) and explore your way.

We stayed for 5 nights in one of two studio suites . The homestead has the main house on the hill and two studio suites located on the lower driveway which offers total privacy for both guests and owner . The view sets the whole ambience to this place and the studio suite which we occupied " the pohutukawa" is large and comfortable with laid back decor .
There's a tiny kitchenette which includes a set of basic cutlery, crockery , toaster & kettle and a small sink . The fridge and pantry was well stocked which is ample for a light continental breakfast all the mornings we were there which works well for us . However should a hot breakfast is needed then you would need to walk a good 20 minutes to oneroa village . Be forewarned that if you're walking the track up and down , the hill is pretty steep and on gravelled ground .
Having the use of the car was a huge plus during our stay and thank you Gary for the very kind offer it made a huge difference !
Service was unobtrusive we had our rooms clean when we needed and our laundry was done with no extra charges that too was an added bonus.
Overall it was the perfect stay for both of us and after 5 nights we can truly say we felt totally at home .
