Great welcome on our entrance where we were offered our table or to have a drink at the bar. I’d recommend the Rhubarb Gin ! Excellent choice on the menu, l chose the beetroot & goats cheese to start, full of flavour, and halibut as a main which was delicious. Generous portions of side dishes cooked perfectly. For pudding l ‘plumped’ for panna cotta with mandarin sorbet, l wanted to lick the dish which says it all. All staff very friendly and relaxed. Thank you and will definitely recommend we’ve done before.

We went for the first time tonight with 2 other friends. The welcome was efficient and friendly without being over the top.A really varied a la carte menu with another limited choice alternative. Service was prompt, professional and cheerful. The food was excellent - very tasty with subtle flavours. I don't usual like food you could photograph but this was very well presented and extremely full of flavour. The portions appeared on the small side but in retrospect I was quite full and satisfied.
I was really impressed by the whole experience - its so nice albeit rare to find a restaurant that ticks every box and we shall certainly return, pretty frequently, I expect.

Six of us visited for a celebratory lunch on Easter Sunday. What a fantastic meal we had! The food was excellent and the service exemplary. The three course Sunday lunch was high quality and a complete bargain at the price (c. £27).

I had the quail to start (perfect), roast shoulder of lamb for main (accompanied by well chosen and brilliantly prepared sides, including first rate roast potatoes, something so many restaurants struggle with). Sticky toffee pudding for dessert was great too.

Every member of staff we encountered was unfailingly polite and helpful (little touches make the difference, like the staff already knowing who had ordered what when it arrived at the table.

The people running this place know what they're doing and their entire team is a credit to them. Can't recommend visiting this local gem highly enough.

A chance discovery in a Kentish village. I have lived within 20 miles all my life, but never visited Matfield before (nor nearby Paddock Wood either, but that was another story). We dropped in on spec, drawn by the kerb appeal of what clearly used to be a pub but is now very definitely a restaurant of standing. OK oak beams, wooden tables (no table cloths) and paper napkins. Otherwise a restaurant run by helpful staff on top of their jobs and pleasant with it, attentive but without being obtrusive. A kitchen and chef to match. We ate from the set menu, and took only two courses each but between us tried both of the two choices for each course. Everything was excellent.

The wine was less than excellent: I took the SA chenin blanc recommended as an accompaniment to the fish, and found it thin and sharp, and swapped it for the red Nero d'Avola that my wife was muttering about. That was too cold for its own good, to be sure, but once it had warmed through in the middle of the main course it was OK.

Would we go again. Yes, without hesitation.
