“One of the best walks in the mountains”
Review of Fortress Rock

Fortress Rock
Reviewed 23 January 2016

I have lived in the Blue Mountains for 25 years and I did not know about this walk until I came across the reviews in TripAdvisor.

When you get onto the dirt section of Mt.Hay Rd it is about 1 km to the signage telling visitors about the area.

If you drive on another 3 km and come across a small blue and white sign on the left saying Fortress Ridge.

When you pull in here you will notice a metal gate blocking off a road into the bush.

This is your walking track. The first 200 metres are the steepest you will do on the walk out to the ridge. The rest is moderate or easy.

When you get to the ridge the views are beautiful.

Great walking, nature and beautiful views. Hard to beat.

This is a great walk out to fortress rock. Great views out over the southern cleared agricultural valley. But the best part of the walk is to continue down to Centennial Glenn and alongside Wall Ledge loop. Along the way you see a path heading to Porters Pass. It's worth turning down here for the 300 metres to the grotto. It's an amazing pool enclosed in a smooth rock circle grotto. Take swimmers and have a dip. Then come back up and continue the walls ledge path. Fantastic views. And you can watch the rock climbers in action. One of their fav spots in blue mountains.

This is a reasonably easy walk with great views. After the uphill slog we continued to the left at the intersection. This ended probably 10-15 minutes later at a spectacular cliff edge.
We back-tracked, took the right hand fork and walked for another 30 minutes to a rocky outcrop with 360 degrees view of the mountains and as the day was clear we could see back to the Sydney basin. We could have gone further but needed to be back. maybe next time.

After the crowds and coaches at Three Sisters, we decided to find a quieter view, so went to mount hay and got that and more!!
No one was there, the drive up was beautiful, giving you a feeling of wilderness and freedom, through the trees and plants.
There are many places to stop and walk, but carry onto the top, Butterbox canyon and you'll be rewarded with amazing panoramas and such quiet you feel alone and at peace.
We went for a walk and were rewarded with even more amazing views, so get out of the truck and go experience it, not just look!
I highly recommend this if like me you prefer peace and tranquility, and a chance to just 'be'

A little way out of town along dirt road that requires some care in places. Short walk, approx 45 minutes return. Crowd-free and stunning views. You could drive further along Mt Hay Rd to further walks if you have the time.
