“Average Hotel, but excellent Beach”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 March 2012

This hotel is in Playa bonita in Las Terrenas, one of the best Beaches in the Dominican Republic. is being develop, so in the near future probably will have more choices, make your reservations with enough time, is a small hotel, but nice. The food, breakfast in the hotel is ok. Do your dinner in town, there are many nice (expensive) restaurants, most of them their food is great, Itanlian, Frech, german, etc. very good food. The hotel is perfect location, in front of the beach, so you will have a great time

This was our first trip to the DR, and out of the US. We picked Hotel Alisei by looking here at Trip Advisor and their website and I can say with certainty that we were not disappointed.

The location is wonderful. Only a 10 min. walk from the center of Las Terrenas (the beach center that is) it is quieter than town but not so far out that you can't enjoy the restaurants and bars of town. The grounds are very well kept, the pool wonderful with great lounge chairs and umbrellas and the on-site restaurant provides a great breakfast bar.

The rooms are wonderful - very clean with a spare European feel. The beds, linens and pillows were very nice, great a/c in the bedrooms, wonderful patios with built-in benches, table 7 chairs, a hammock and excellent views. there are chain hotels in the states that charge more and are not this nice.

The service - from check-in, bar service, housekeeping - was excellent. My wife was sick on our last day (she just had to sample the oysters from a bucket that a guy was selling in town) and the housekeeping lady that came in while I was out was very kind to her. As was the spa host in understanding when I had to cancel my wife's appointments and recommending remedies and were to get things in town.

The only downsides I could possibly mention would be the beach - there is coral in fairly close and this limits the swimming . As most people have mentioned though you only have to walk 2 minutes either direction to find good swimming. The restaurant dinner we had one night was adequate; I can't say it was the best but was certainly better than the resort we stayed at in Samana.

I would recommend Las Terrenas and the Hotel Alisei to anyone thinking of vacationing in the DR.

Thank you to all the staff at the Hotel Alisei. Gracias por permitirnos visitar su hermoso pais.

Room Tip: Rooms toward the rear of the property are away from the road and thus quieter. Upper levels have exc...

Surely the best resort in Las Terrenas, in a quiet position, just in front of a nice sandy beach, shaded by palm trees and equipped with sunbeds & tables; the town center is less than 10 minutes walk along the beach road, several restaurants & bars are even closer.
There is a rather large tropical garden, swimming pool with wet bar, all apartments have a large dining/living room with fully equipped kitchen area, 1 or 2 bedrooms (respectively with 1 / 2 bathrooms) and a large terrace overlooking the garden/sea with table and sofa, where you can eat or relax.
The housekeeping service is very efficient, all is well maintained and clean; all rooms are large, quiet, with comfortables beds, TV, large closets with drawers and lots of space enough to store the cloth & luggage of a large family for several week’s vacation.
There is a good all-day restaurant, with buffet breakfast, free WI-FI internet connection and it’s the only hotel in Las Terrenas with his own SPA.
After having been in Las Terrenas many times for the past 8 years and tried several different hotels, this is the second straight year that we go back to Alisei, as it’s surely the best place for a long & comfortable holiday, especially with kids, with a good ratio quality/price.

My boyfriend and I stayed at the Alisei last month and we had a wonderful time. The apartments are very spacious, comfortable and clean. The grounds are beautifully landscaped and there is a gorgeous pool in the middle with a very practical bar in the center.

We have stayed in other places around Las Terrenas in the past, but this is by far, the best kept hotel that is within our budget. The staff was super friendly and were prompt to accomodate any of our needs.

One of the big advantages of staying at the Alisei Hotel is that it has its own restaurant. They offer a buffet breakfast every day, which is super convenient. We were treated to Dominican and international dishes with lots of fresh juice and fresh tropical fruit. I must say that we were totally spoiled.

We are already looking forward to coming back next year.

Lots to say about this trip. The hotel was great. We had a few small problems and were instantly upgraded. This was unnecessary as we would have paid but it was complimentary. Our original request was for a penthouse room which ended up being much smaller than we would have liked. There were only two of us but we like our space. We ended up with a multi leveled two bedroom unit with a first floor patio and kitchen. We never used the kitchen but loved the patio. The whole unit was nicely and colorfully furnished. The king size bed was not very comfortable for me but the mattress was firm. There were two bathrooms both with showers, no tubs. A/C, ceiling fans, room safe and TV's rounded out the ammenities. The pool was large and clean with a swim up bar. Never a problem getting a lounge chair. Across the street was their beach which received restaurant service as did the pool. We ate at the restaurant twice and both times had a very good meal. The room comes with a buffet breakfast which was mediocore but did offer omelettes/fried eggs and an assortment of other hot dishes which appeared to be of a local flavor. We loved the spa where you could get a one hour spa treatment including massage for $46.00 . This was the biggest bargain of the trip. All in all the Hotel Alisei appeared to be the nicest property we saw. We were always treated courteously and the property was well maintained.

Las Terrenas is off the beaten path. We had never been to the Dominicab Republic and wanted something beside a mega-resort. It is a two hour ride (mostly easy highway) from Santo Domingo. We rented from Ace/Nelly rental car at the airport and got a great deal on an economy 4 door for 6 days for $168.00. You will want some Dominican Pesos before hittng the road as there are at least 4 tolls on the way to Las Terrenas. Exchange rate was better at the hotel than at the airport. I suggest printing the directions from the airport to the hotel from the hotel's website. We did not do this and made a mistake leaving the airport and got totally confused once at Las Terrenas. Las Terrenas is not pretty until you get to the water. The locals drive motorbikes and the tourists drive quads or cars. Everybody zips thru the narrow streets while the pedestrians scamper for the sidewalks. It has a wild west flair. It is hectic and mostly impoverished but we did feel safe. Probably because of the many shotgun toting security guards positioned throughout the town. There are many good restaurants, it's hard to go wrong. I was suprised at the high quality of the meals (especially the pasta dishes) and the fish was always freshly caught.

The beach across from the Hotel Alisei did not offer a very large swimming area due to coral but there was a reasonable place to swim. We found if we headed east out of town (with the water to your left) we found nicer beaches at Las Palapas and El Portillo. There are also some nice restaurants and other smaller hotels in this area. Shopping in Las Terrenas is a short term affair unless you are looking for fruit, native art or the truck full of sneakers. Nah, it's a little better than that but not much.

Bring a flashlight if you go into town because the road from the hotel into town is either poorly lit or not lit at all. It's a short walk and the stars are glorious but it's very dark and you don't want to get hit by some drunken tourist on a quad.

I think you have to have a sense of adventure to go to Las Terrenas but if you do and if you can live without the gated security of a mega resort you will find an up and coming tourist destination with a suprising number of good restaurants, lovely beaches and a great place to stay at the Hotel Alisei.

Room Tip: Penthouse rooms are three flights up and there is no elevator.
