We stayed at the Pestana Grand on 5 October for 1 week and we could not have had a better time, very friendly attentive staff who catered for your every need, very relaxing and peaceful, set in a quiet part of Madeira but with still plenty of restaurants and bars to choose from only minutes away.
The room was very large and airy with a lovely tiled bathroom which was all very new and clean - cleaniness was a top priority all across the island.
Breakfast was great, plenty to choose from at the buffet from fruit, cereals, various breads and rolls to delicious hot food cooked on the spot at your request. There was even cava on ice for those of you who wanted a more special breakfast.
We didn't eat at the restaurants in the hotel as we was on a B&B basis, but we wanted to try the various restaurants we had read about plus the hotel restaurants were more expensive, but this is to be expected of a 5 star hotel.
We did have a cocktail each night in the hotels Coast Bar before and after dinner and cocktails were reasonably priced at around 4.00GBP, drinks were bought to you along with some peanuts.
There were lovely views looking over the atlantic whilst sipping your drink.
On our first day we walked to Funchal which took 30 mins along the main road, you can also walk along the prom, we carried on into the old town and had lunch at a nice little restaurant which was quite high and had nice views over the ocean, very reasonably priced as you will find in the old town.
We also had a one way trip on the cable car which took you to the very top of the mountain, here we walked up steep hills and rocky areas (good walking shoes are a must have), all across the island is very hilly but on the way to town you can get away with wearing comfortable flip flops.
I would like to mention some of the amazing restaurants we dined in whilst here:
Real Canoa - This is highly recommended by alot of people on this site and they are not wrong, we came here on our first eve and were not disappointed, the food is very tasty, you must try the steak or prawns on the stone, you have a slab of stone piping hot brought to your table and then cook your meat or fish from fresh right in front of you, therefore you can cook it to your exact liking. Bruno the owner is so friendly and full of knowledge, after only a weeks stay you feel as though you have known him and his staff for years! Very reasonably priced, also go for lunch as the toasted sandwiches are lovely and the chips are great too!! We will definately be back!
Docas de Cavacas: This is like a oldy fashioned fisherman style restaurant, if you come out of the hotel and do a left and come on to the prom you will find some wide steps and then you will see the restaurant. My partner had the largest prawns I had seen for starters with a garlic tomato sauce, I had again very large melt in the mouth mussels in garlic sauce and for mains we both had a mixed fish scewer which was amazing, we had three courses with wine and water and it was reasonably priced for two of us at around 47.00GBP.
O Barquerio - This is on the prom just before the steps to the restaurant above, a little more pricey for some dishes but our bill was still around the 50.00GBP mark. Here you could pick your fish from the counter or the tank if you wanted. Whilst you wait they bring you some small appetisers and bread. We both had Tuna for our main and it was in a tomato garlic sauce with onions, peppers etc, we shared Shrimps to start but they look more like your UK prawn!!
Monumental Grill - Turn right out of hotel and follow road to the main road where the supermarket complex is and then across and right, another good place which is reasonably priced with excellent food and good service.
Lastly I have to mention the Magic Tea House, this is part of the Pestana chain and is next door to the hotel on the prom - good for a light lunch of sandwiches and salads, a nice cold bear or wine, or choose from their extensive tea list.
Overall we had a lovely stay in a hotel that I will rate as a 5 star, but a comfortable one without being over the top. I have stayed in 4 star and 4+ hotels which have been lovely but this beats them all and we are planning on returning in June 2008.
Try it for yourself you will not be disappointed!!
