Loved this hotel

4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 14 Oct 2007
This hotel well deserves its 5*s. It is well situated about 3Kms from the city with an hourly complimentary bus service during the day and evening. The promenade runs beside the hotel and leads straight into Funchal but there are numerous steps and a steep hill. It is not suitable for persons with bad legs but taxis are cheap and plentiful.

It is clean and most of the staff speak English. They are friendly, helpful and efficient. The rooms are large and we had a wonderful view of the sea and the coast on either side. The swimming pools, indoor and out are superb and there is a well equipped fitness centre with body treatments and a hairdresser.
3 restaurants serve various national foods and the breakfast can be taken in the restaurant or on the decking outside by the pool. This meal is buffet and literally as much as one can eat, hot, cold, fruit or the lot with coffee, tea or chocolate. Local “champagne” is also available free.

On the promenade about 300m away there are 2 decent restaurants, one Italian serving the usual pastas, etc. The other is called O’Barqueiro and here the food is mostly local fish dishes which are excellent and honestly priced. One tip – one meal between two is sufficient as the portions are huge and accompanied by garlic bread and plenty of fresh vegetables including dry roasted sweet potato and rice.

We would recommend this hotel for anyone wanting a quiet, relaxing week any longer could be a bit boring unless one takes the Levada walks which are for the fit only. A visit to the Casino is well worth a visit for the dinner show. The food and drink are excellent and included in the ticket price.

We stayed at the Pestana Grand on 5 October for 1 week and we could not have had a better time, very friendly attentive staff who catered for your every need, very relaxing and peaceful, set in a quiet part of Madeira but with still plenty of restaurants and bars to choose from only minutes away.
The room was very large and airy with a lovely tiled bathroom which was all very new and clean - cleaniness was a top priority all across the island.
Breakfast was great, plenty to choose from at the buffet from fruit, cereals, various breads and rolls to delicious hot food cooked on the spot at your request. There was even cava on ice for those of you who wanted a more special breakfast.
We didn't eat at the restaurants in the hotel as we was on a B&B basis, but we wanted to try the various restaurants we had read about plus the hotel restaurants were more expensive, but this is to be expected of a 5 star hotel.
We did have a cocktail each night in the hotels Coast Bar before and after dinner and cocktails were reasonably priced at around 4.00GBP, drinks were bought to you along with some peanuts.
There were lovely views looking over the atlantic whilst sipping your drink.
On our first day we walked to Funchal which took 30 mins along the main road, you can also walk along the prom, we carried on into the old town and had lunch at a nice little restaurant which was quite high and had nice views over the ocean, very reasonably priced as you will find in the old town.
We also had a one way trip on the cable car which took you to the very top of the mountain, here we walked up steep hills and rocky areas (good walking shoes are a must have), all across the island is very hilly but on the way to town you can get away with wearing comfortable flip flops.

I would like to mention some of the amazing restaurants we dined in whilst here:

Real Canoa - This is highly recommended by alot of people on this site and they are not wrong, we came here on our first eve and were not disappointed, the food is very tasty, you must try the steak or prawns on the stone, you have a slab of stone piping hot brought to your table and then cook your meat or fish from fresh right in front of you, therefore you can cook it to your exact liking. Bruno the owner is so friendly and full of knowledge, after only a weeks stay you feel as though you have known him and his staff for years! Very reasonably priced, also go for lunch as the toasted sandwiches are lovely and the chips are great too!! We will definately be back!

Docas de Cavacas: This is like a oldy fashioned fisherman style restaurant, if you come out of the hotel and do a left and come on to the prom you will find some wide steps and then you will see the restaurant. My partner had the largest prawns I had seen for starters with a garlic tomato sauce, I had again very large melt in the mouth mussels in garlic sauce and for mains we both had a mixed fish scewer which was amazing, we had three courses with wine and water and it was reasonably priced for two of us at around 47.00GBP.

O Barquerio - This is on the prom just before the steps to the restaurant above, a little more pricey for some dishes but our bill was still around the 50.00GBP mark. Here you could pick your fish from the counter or the tank if you wanted. Whilst you wait they bring you some small appetisers and bread. We both had Tuna for our main and it was in a tomato garlic sauce with onions, peppers etc, we shared Shrimps to start but they look more like your UK prawn!!

Monumental Grill - Turn right out of hotel and follow road to the main road where the supermarket complex is and then across and right, another good place which is reasonably priced with excellent food and good service.

Lastly I have to mention the Magic Tea House, this is part of the Pestana chain and is next door to the hotel on the prom - good for a light lunch of sandwiches and salads, a nice cold bear or wine, or choose from their extensive tea list.

Overall we had a lovely stay in a hotel that I will rate as a 5 star, but a comfortable one without being over the top. I have stayed in 4 star and 4+ hotels which have been lovely but this beats them all and we are planning on returning in June 2008.

Try it for yourself you will not be disappointed!!

Stayed here for one week and overall the experience was pleasant. We found the service very good in all departments. The room was adequate and clean, the breakfast was plentiful and varied, the staff friendly and attentive.
We had an inland view which wasn’t ideal looking onto Flora and apartments opposite, but there was no noise or problems.

The situation of the hotel is good, most rooms look out onto the Atlantic (you will pay a premium, but it is worth it, especially if you are in a room that is elevated), as does the gardens and pool areas.

From the hotel you can take a stroll along the coast to Funchal which at a leisurely pace takes around 45 mins, or take the courtesy bus which takes around 5-10 mins. Our only gripe with the bus is that it does not run frequently enough.

Overall a pleasant stay, by Mediterranean standards would class this as a good 4 star hotel.

Fantastic hotel, excellent service. I read the recent reviews before booking and agree with them all. Didn't eat in hotel apart from superb breakfast (even serving Champagne) as there is no shortage of fantastic good value restaurants around. Taxis are cheap and if you like long walks Funchal centre is about an hour away.....and we are fit and walk fast.
But don't let that put anyone off. The hotel is great. We will be back to Madeira in April, probably to tour but will be back to the Pestana Grand.

My husband and I stayed at the Pestana Grand beginning of September 2007. We booked the Pestana after reading the trip advisor reviews and have to agree with most reviews but like all these reviews personal taste and preference is an individual thing and not everyone likes or dislikes the same things. So here was our take on the holiday.

The hotel is part of a large Pestana chain and the group seems to have hotels decorated in all manner of styles. The Pestana Grand is a new hotel and was to our finding whilst being very clean and stylish, a little sterile for my liking. The rooms were very large and everything worked, although they could have done with chopping a couple of feet off the room at either end and adding it to the balcony and bathroom. The bathroom being rather cramped.

Didn't like the sunbed set up round the pool as it was a case of sardines all in a row round the pool with no areas in the gardens that you could take your bed to for some privacy so you were literally lying 3 inches away from the next bed. I'm also quite a keen swimmer so I wasn't too keen on the saltwater pool or its sloping ends (2 strokes and you hit the bottom).

The spa area was very nice although the staff didn't seem to have a problem with children using the spa pool and jacuzzi which was a bit annoying.

We stayed bed and breakfast at the hotel and the breakfasts were very good, everything you could want for. We did not have a meal in the evening due to the very high prices that were being charged and I felt it a shame that the hotel was losing out here as the menus and restaurants looked really nice but were empty, so lower prices and I'm sure more people would eat in.

The best restaurant near the hotel and in fact I think one of the best in Funchal is the Real Canoa - excellent prices and food and really nice staff and owner Bruno who will tempt you in and persuade you to try all sorts of things. Couple of nice fish restaurants right of the hotel by the sea, local fish restaurant down the steps and the Barquerio almost next to the hotel which are very good. Do have sandwiches and a scone at the Magic Tea House next door, they do the best sandwiches I have ever had and fantastic tea, give them the setting and linen tablecloths and the food knocks spots off tea at Reids.

Caught the hotel bus into town a few times although we could have done with an earlier bus as the first one leaves at 9.40 and you don't get to Funchal till 10am, a bit late if you were wanting to go on an excursion or walk etc. We walked back most nights from the old town which was a hike - be prepared this hotel is not really walkable both ways into the old town but local bus service is really good from the centre of Funchal, about 4 or 5 buses go along the front and stop at the shopping Forum which is one street away from the Hotel.

They will try to persuade you to go and look at the Pestana Promenade as a time share purchase. If you want a free casino ticket or 75 euros off your hotel bill, wait until you get the invite to Thursday evening cocktails to take up the offer and not at the beginning of the holiday as the freebie is better.

To sum up the hotel is very clean, stylish, lots of glass and marble and very modern but for me lacked soul and felt a little sterile, a little like a 1 night stay in very large hotel.

Will definately be back to Madeira as we love the Island and it is our 2nd visit but would probably not stay at the Pestana Grand again.

Have just returned from a week at the Grand Pestana Hotel and i would highly recommend this hotel. It is almost impossible for me to find anything to complain about this hotel, but I would say it's lacking that little something to make it a 5star, would def say it's a 4star plus though.

Hotel position - A large hotel on the edge of Funchal. A great location, as you are nice and close to Funchal centre (about 5 euros in a taxi) but it's in a nice a quiet area. There is a large shopping centre just at the top of the road with a big supermarket

Rooms - We had a double room and the room is massive - the biggest we've had abroad. Tea and coffee making facilities, a fridge, bottle opener (no corkscrew), TV, Sofa, Good size balcony (no washing line) with very comfy beds.

Faclities of hotel - 2 Gorgeous outdoor swimming pools and very well designed. Good spa facilities with sauna, steam room, jacuzzi and indoor pool - which goes outside too. Very well maintained public areas.

Breakfast - Excellent buffet breakfast. Loads of different breads, cakes, cereals, meats, cheeses, fruit and a large selection of cooked items, inc eggs cooked to order, omelettes and pancakes

Restaurants/Bars - Relaxing bar with the singers/mellow entertainment in evenings. Drinks are more expensive than outside the hotel, but this is to be expected of a hotel.

Where to eat - We went bed and breakfast, so we ate in a number of different restaurants - but our favourite was Real Canoa restaurant just opposite the hotel restaurant - highly recommended. Other places to try, if you come out of the hotel and turn left - there are 2 restaurants just around the corner - one Italian and one fish restaurant - both i would highly recommend.

We did eat in the hotel one night, the BBQ night and the food was very good - but a lot more expensive than eating out.

In the town i would recommend "Marina Terrace Restaurant" along the harbour front - the owners are great people and the fish in there was amazing - they also didn't hassle people to go in, which is also a bonus!

There is a bus into town, but the week we went there was quiet a few clouds and therefore the bus was packed each day - and taxi's a quiet cheap so I'd recommend them.

Funchal is very nice resort, but there isn't much going on there in the evenings - which suited us - but if you are looking for evening entertainment, then you won't find much there.

Don't miss the Catamaran trip - either book it from the rep or just go down the the harbour and book. Highly recommended.
