We walked in and the reception area is so beautiful it takes your breath away. We stayed here for 2 nights on a tour, it's very central next to Nelson Cathedral and the shopping centre. Hardy St where the restaurants are is close by. We had breakfast in the Oceano Restaurant and that was delightful. The staff friendly and approachable, and a good selection of breakfast items. Everywhere in the hotel is clean and sparkling, good quality wood and shining brasses. The room was spacious with lots of storage and a good working desk.

Room Tip: Room 612 overlooking the cathedral and park

Two night stay to visit a client and stay on for a Tasman Makos game on the Friday night.
I have stayed in this hotel before and it has a great reception area and also good restaurants and a comfortable bar.
My room was up to the usual high standard with a good desk for completing last minute business and facilities as expected from this hotel group.
Is typically a little pricey when compared to motel alley but does offer that little bit more.
A safe bet.

Reckon I’ve stayed well over 80 nights so far this year alone easily at many motels and hotels throughout the country yet the Rutherford in Nelson has to be at the top of all those places as simply the best. Why? Well the surroundings when you enter the main foyer offers elegance, the service desk staff exceptionally professional. The décor has a high class feel about it. The rooms are incredibly well kept, clean and extremely comfortable, plus are able to open a window for real fresh air and shut off the air conditioning if you so desire. The bathroom reminds me I must make-over the bathroom at home one day – I like the clean (unbroken) tiles, free standing hand basin on what looks like a greenstone marble cabinet and spotlessly clean glass shower doors. The small fridge does not hum or rattle through the night either and Sky includes many channels others don’t. There is a very comfortable bed, more than usual as well as a ‘pillow menu’.
The Check-In computer recalls when you last stayed and my room had a nice basket of fresh fruit to greet me along with a welcome back card from Management.
The dining room is large, well-appointed with a nautical theme and menu to match. Breakfast (depending on numbers in house) offers a buffet as well as a la carte. It’s a well presented breakfast with a lot of thought gone into the buffet to reach out to the diet conscious as well as the ‘ordinary Kiwi’. Better still it’s open from 6am. This Hotel offers much more, a gym, a café, a Japanese themed restaurant and a house bar with a small snack menu. If there were one point towards a negative it would be that the Rutherford is a hotel after all and there is a charge for everything – even to park your car overnight in the hotel car park. No free Wi-Fi either and it’s a small data limit. So big city prices for a small regional city would best sum it up – but worth the experience. Oh, location-wise, it’s nestled on the fringe of the CBD within walking distance to many cafes, shops and restaurants.

Room Tip: The higher up (7 floors) the better the view.

My husband and I won a fabulous weekend to Nelson, and this amazing hotel was our accommodation. A beautiful heritage hotel, friendly and helpful staff, and clean, modern rooms. Great location, close to amenities is, cafes, bars and shopping.

Location is excellent, easy to find, good for conference with plenty of rooms with adequate space BUT if you are thinking of having a conference do a close check on what the meals will consist of! Breakfast was fine except they kept on running out so you constatntly asking for the hot stuff, limited cereal options . The morning tea/afternnon tea, lunch and dinners left a lot to be desired and the McDonalds over the road did a roaring trade from our team. Quantity and the choice of dishes were the problem. Then 1.5% surcharge when paying by credit card. Not acceptable these days.

Room Tip: Small windows so not much view
