Parked up & took a walk along the pathway, it is a joint pathway so pay attention to cyclists, plenty of places to stop off & rest if there’s a rain cloud looming or just to take in the views, various pieces of exercise equipment for those that feel the need, felt very safe, lovely to walk underneath the trees listening to the birds, there are some amazing houses on the opposite side, one can sit & day dream, certainly worth a visit if you have the time.

This walking/cycle path follows The Esplanade for at least 8 km. I try to walk it every week to keep up my fitness. There's plenty of shade in most parts (but wear a hat for the unshaded parts). It gets quite hot in Hervey Bay in the Summer and early autumn.

The esplanade covers a large area. Excellent for walking, riding, running or sightseeing. A visit to the Urangan pier is a must. At 880 metres long, you will see many sea life.

Every 10 minutes along the esplanade there are toilets, taps, bubblers, bbq and sheltered areas. All in excellent condition and in working order.

Any trip to Hervey Bay would be incomplete without visiting the Esplanade.

A must see attraction.

We caught the Greyhound bus to Hervey Bay from Childers as a break from fruit picking one Sunday. If you’re interested the times of the buses fit perfectly for a day trip! It was a real heatwave while we were there and shade temps were 39 that day so if you intend walking take lots of water...you’ll need it!

We walked the whole length from where the bus stops at Torquay all the way along past Shelly Beach to the pier at Urangan. A beautiful walk but at you get further along towards the pier there is very little shade. The Torquay end is lovely as you can walk along the board walk under the shade of the trees. It’s been really well thought out and is a credit to the planners. Coming from Britain where public toilets are becoming a rarity I was so impressed by the toilets, picnic places, tables and barbecue facilities all along the front. You really won’t find much like that in England! But maybe that’s because we have about 2 weeks of good weather a year!

At the Torquay end the board walk is in memory of a little boy who died of cancer and I found this both very touching and a wonderful way for him to be remembered. I sat on the bench with my son and counted my blessings.

Places to buy refreshments along the way are limited, particularly on a Sunday it seemed. Not many of the tourist shops were open at all. Australia may have the edge on toilet facilities but England would never miss a chance to line a promenade with ice cream vans and drinks vendors in the summer! It was a relief to finally reach Urangan pier and buy some cold drinks. Don’t under estimate the time it takes to walk there and back in the heat...especially if like us you want to go along the beach from time to time...or you might miss the bus back!

The esplanade is awesome, it is approx 12 kms of paved walk or bike way that will take you from the Boat Marina all the way to Point Vernon. The regional council take great care of it and the gardens along the way and there are very many picnic and BBQ locations along the way. There are also many restaurants and coffee shops along the way.
