Staying at this campsite on our way after the North Island to South Island crossing we found it to be a bit basic with excellent toilets and showers it is fairly quiet at night even though you are near the newly reopened SH1 which might be due to it closing at night the SH1 from Picton is interesting but doable with patience

Beautiful location by the sea....small site, no actual allocated places given, which could I quess cause problems if busy. we went in Autumn and so very quiet in fact only us, but I can imagine in peak time packed.
Shower unit very basic and for us in Autumn very cold...but toilet block very clean and secure.
No waste deposit but water and electricity hook up if required and washing up...washers and dryers all looked OK.
When we went the road that took 15 min to town of kaikoura shut, due to be opened we believe may 2017, I would check however if going soon as to get to town otherwise takes 5 hrs round trip.
However camp site...beautiful and wildlife when quiet gets up close, seals etc
Worth stopping a night or two.

Cheap but full service Holiday Park. Sheltered from the wind and 5 minutes walk from the beach. This was our first night in the Campervan. Scenic hills surrounding the deep valley; I don't know about trails from here.

At the campsite tonight, first visit and already know I'll be back! Beautiful scenery with the beach right across the road. Staying in a cabin for a bit of a treat, fairly priced, very clean, just have to supply your own linen and cooking utensils etc. Very friendly owners. Lovely hot showers, have to push a button outside shower for hot water for 6 minutes at a time but considering its gas heated it's fully understandable. The kitchen is small but clean and tidy. The seating/dining/BBQ/TV area is really cool. On a hot night like tonight it's great having the air come through, probably won't be so fun in the middle of winter but there is a heater. Highly recommended :)

Just dropped in for 2 days one night in a caravan took a dingy so we could have a fish
We had a powered sight in Boat Harbour fantastic view over the sea lots of road noise and the odd train going past as you would expect
The showers & toilets where clean and everything that was needed for a $35 a night I thought it was good value
Being able to be right by the sea is special
Always something to look at Waves ,Seals,Birds
A good old fashioned Kiwi style camping ground hard to find now days
