An amazing treasure trove of local history. Great photos and exhibits. If you are tracing info on old West coast towns, industries, maritime activity or people, this is a must visit. Stacks of early accessible files have been compiled to help research or just browsing.

I must say Greymouth as a place to visit doesn't have a whole lot. But their local museum is a must. We especially enjoyed the shipwreck section and the videos about how difficult it is to enter their harbor and the tales of ships who tried and failed. We also enjoyed learning about the coal mining in the region and how tragic some of the mining experiences were, even in recent history. Lastly, their coverage of Cyclone Ida and the various earthquakes that have closed roads on the west coast was extremely interesting. The museum presented the material well and had many local photos and videotaped interviews with people who remembered some of these events.

I'm not sure this is an ideal visit for younger children, but for those interested in the history (esp. the story of various floods) of Greymouth and this part of NZ, I'd say it is well worth a visit.

I have been twice here, have no blood relatives, but oh how these descendents know their roots, and are proud to share with you, their life stories ! The amazing stories of life this West Coast stop on the tourist route, terminal of the famous trans Alpine train journey, and doorway to the chance of talking to some of the most interesting folk! Particularly if you're of Welsh, Irish, or Scottish background, who knows, you may have a relative here ! I say well worth visit and the journey over from Christchurch!
