The only bad thing about the Flying Fox was that we had to leave after one night to catch the ferry @ Wellington. Otherwise we would have definitely extended our stay here. Next level 'Glamping' in the lovely bell tent and we really loved taking a nice hot bath in the forest. Don't leave the Northern island without stopping by at the Flying Fox.

We were cycling the River Road to Whanganui and booked to stay at the Flying Fox. It is in a perfect half way overnight location and the arrival by cable car is very cute.

All the information we received ahead of time was excellent - even down to the warning about the steep driveway. An important piece of information for cyclists. As soon as we arrived someone from the lodge contacted us by radio telephone to welcome us and gave us information on where to put our bikes in the storage shed. We were then whisked across the river just in time to beat the thunderstorm that had been threatening.

Jane and Kelly were great from the moment we arrived. We stayed in the Gypsy Caravan which is a glamping experience. It is an army-style tent with a lovely comfortable bed and a wee gypsy cart alongside with a kitchenette. There is no electricity here so we had to charge our various devices in the main lodge but that wasn’t an issue. The cart is well equipped with gas cooker and plenty of implements.

We were self-catering and had a meal that needed a microwave but could easily do this in the lodge. Jane caters meals and, by all accounts, provides a great service. She was happy to allow us to use the facilities in the main kitchen just encouraging us (completely fairly) to avoid her peak time when she was preparing and serving dinner.

There’s a fab little shop with staples, souvenirs, crafts and goodies. And boy the prices are incredibly fair. We did a little stock up of food for our travels.

I loved our night in the tent despite torrential rain. I slept with the flaps open so could wake up to the views of the river. There is plenty of bedding to keep warm and a mosquito net to keep away any bugs (though there weren’t too many of those).

All in all a great stay with friendly and accommodating hosts.

Pricing was reasonable though do be aware that if you are cycling, there is a charge of $5 per bike to store your bikes in the shed on the other side of the river. We didn’t know this and were told to put our bikes in the shed and were surprised to see this charge on our bill when we left. Small price to pay but just important to know to expect this.

Thanks for your feedback Linda. Apologies for the oversight in not telling you about the bike storage charge. We will amend our procedures and website accordingly.

This place is a fabulous experience. The flying fox access is very cool! We stayed in James K Cottage which was perfect for us two couples. We had our meal prepared by hosts Kelly and Jane. The food was good, and we thoroughly enjoyed their company. We will no doubt return to experience some of the other accommodation options on this site!

After a long Canoetrip we came this week to the campsite. It was a beautiful place for us. Very friendly people, hot shower and a little shop with nice things. We felt very comfortable. Thank you for the hospitality.

We were in the Glory cart, tent with attached kitchen and bathroom. Very well equipped, and the bed was very comfortable. We were expecting a cold shower, but there was a gas water heater. Solar and battery lights everywhere. The stars are amazing on a clear night. Run by very friendly and approachable couple.

Room Tip: There are descriptions of all the units on their website. The buildings have power.
