Really enjoyed staying at this hostel. Incredibly clean (both rooms, kitchen, loos and shower and communal areas). Very cool chilled vibe also. Would definitely recommend - worth the money. Free brekkie and free wi-fi - always a plus! Staff are lovely too - especially Nadir! Had a fab week here - would stay again.

Room Tip: We chose girls only and was great - no smelly guys!

I stayed here for one week in January and then came back to stay for a month over February/March. Compared to other hostles I've been to this one appears to be pretty organized and very clean. They really go the length to make a fun atmosphere and get everyone involved in some sort of activity while they are there. Every night usually has some different event taking place, like BBQ and quiz night, talent night, local artist night and the pub crawl. One word of warning though, this hostel is really focused on music and entertainment and can sometimes be a bit loud in the common/lounge area since there is always music playing or someone jamming on the provided guitars.

The common area has many tables and chairs, couches and some great bean-bags for lounging around. There were plenty of power points in the bean bag area but it would be nice if they had some power strips and extension cords to work on your laptop at the tables. The free wifi was really nice and helped me get a lot of work done but the timeout is much too quick and I must have logged in more than 250 times during my stay there! :) I didn't use the TV area much but it was separated from the lounge room by a glass partition and was a reasonably quiet place to chill out and watch a movie.

The kitchen was nice but sometimes had way too many people using it to move around properly. There were 4 stoves, 4 microwaves, 2 toasters and 2 ovens (one was broken while I stayed there) and it was usually enough for everyone to share. The refridgerators usually had enough space for my bag and I had my own cubby hole on the wall to keep all my dry goods. There was also a flatscreen TV which was a nice touch so you could check out the news while having breakfast, etc. The one reccomendation I could make would be to install a freezer so guests can keep frozen vegetables, fries and ice cream.

The whole time I was there I stayed in 8 bed dorms, the first one I stayed in seemed to be a bit smaller compared to the other two and I had a bit of trouble finding space for all my stuff and still move around. The other two dorms I stayed in seemed to be a bit bigger and I did have plenty of space for my stuff but some of the guests make it difficult because they are clueless about common courtesy and left stuff all over the room (not that this is Habitat's fault.) The bathoom was a good size, clean, and had around 8 toilets and 8 showers which seemed to be enough for everyone. The only complaint I had is the water from the shower next to you would splash under the partition and get water and soap all over your legs after drying off, a bit nit-picky but still kind of annoying.

I really met a lot of awesome people here and some great friends that I will be keeping in contact with in the future. Definitely reccommended to anyone on a working holiday visa and can stand a bit of fun and rowdyness at night. Don't worry about noise issues in the rooms though, you can't hear anything from the lounge even if they are partying it up hard.

Loved this hostel! Very friendly staff, lots of free and fun activities, free wifi, nice kitchen with an oven (for real!). The Melbourne walking tour and the St.Kilda mosey were good to get to know the area. The bathrooms were very clean. The rooms were very small, and the beds weren't super comfy, but most dorm beds aren't, to be fair. I've stayed in many hostels in many countries, and this was one of the best!

Habitat was definitely one of the best hostels i've ever stayed in. The staff at reception were warm and friendly, and the range of activities you can do through the hostel was really good. The free walking tour of the city was especially good, and our guide took us to the best food places in the city.
The shower room was huge so you never had to worry about waiting for a shower, and the toilets and showers were always clean, and the floors in the bedrooms were hoovered every day.
I also liked that each bunk had its own locker so you never had to worry about anything going missing.
Awesome hostel, the only down side is that there's no age limit in the hostel and one of our roomates was a grumpy old man, but bar that, an awesome place to stay, and easy to meet other backpackers in the common areas and huge kitchen.

Good standard of hostel- bathrooms clean and plenty of them- computer areas for using the internet (though a lot of them were out of order when I was there)

Kitchen is a bit small for the number of people there, and the dorm I stayed in was so small, really cramped, not much space to move about, and the air con didn't seem to work.

Apart from that it was a nice enough place, airport transfers could be arranged at reception and there was a nice common room.

Good location- St.Kilda's main shopping/eating street is a short walk away.
