Description: “Tasmanian Beef Specialist” Located in the historic art deco Luck’s Butchery shop in Launceston, Tasmania, Black Cow showcases grass fed, free range, hormone free, dry aged, premium Tasmanian beef including brands from Cape Grim, Greenhams, Clover Country, King Island and Flinders Island amongst others. Legislation in Tasmania against the use of hormone growth promotants and antibiotics in red meat production combined with Tasmanian graziers’ focus on free-range grass fed cattle produces happy animals and superior quality meat. A flexible pricing structure and side dishes designed around fresh, local produce allow guests to create the dining experience they desire. Also sporting a well-priced wine list with a heavy emphasis on local Tasmanian wines with some full-bodied reds thrown in for good measure. An energetic atmosphere and friendly professional service completes the Black Cow offering. This casual Bistro style has been a hit with the local community as well as visitors so reservations are essential. A private wine room offers dining for up to 12 guests for those important dinners and negotiations. Open 7 nights a week from 5:30pm to late. The Black Cow logo has been inspired by the amazing ancient artworks in the Lascaux Caves in France. Carbon dating indicates that these paintings are more than 17,000 years old. Black Cow, the name, is a tribute to the Bos Genus… Historically the cow has been important to many cultures. It has been seen and worshiped as a symbol of contentedness, fecundity, the passive yet creative and generative powers of nature, patience, nourishment, abundance, fertility and equifinality. It is also, of course, an excellent source of protein.

Having read the tripadvisor reviews of the many restaurants way before I came over to Launceston, I settled on this one and made a booking for dinner for 6, and 2 children.

To be fair, coming to such a place with two children I should have known better, but then again thats why I didn't choose Stillwater too.

They make a great fuss about their sharing plates, and I ordered one 600gm portion with great anticipation only for it to fall flat. We were asked to 'upgrade' to 800gms, which we did, medium cooked it certainly isn't. Result being each of us only got a small piece of meat around 50-60 odd gms, which was dry and slightly chewy.

Tiger prawns were more like shrimps, which I'm not entirely sure about though the seasoning was spot on.

All in all, I left feeling a bit short changed and felt that maybe we should have stuck to ordering individual portions instead. Maybe then this review would turn out differently. As it is, I have tasted much better steaks elsewhere in Australia for this price and left sufficiently disappointed for this time around.

We had a small party of 10 plus 1 baby and we were catered for in every way. We go the private room at the back and loved the environment and the service. Although we were tucked away at the back we have great service and recommendations from the staff. We loved the large t bone steaks which were cooked to perfection and the other wagyu steaks and ribs were great. There is nothing from this place that we could fault. Great place for dinner.

We noticed the card for this establishment will at Stillwater and we’re advised it’s the same owners.

It’s a busy place that needs a reservation but it’s worth the several days wait.

Best steak I had on my 3 week trip in Tassie which says a lot.
