There is a club near the hotel that many say you can hear all night, but my room is 17A, the closest room to the club and I didn't hear it mostly, and if I did it was faint. The beds are comfy and the staff super friendly, especially blonde Jamie. (she should get a raise! :) ) There is a kitchen that all guests use and you are asked to clean up after yourselves, which isn't hard, and the kitchen has everything you could ever possibly need, even things from different countries for foreign guests. There are pool tables and vending machines with snacks and drinks that are cheap. The showers at the time of our visit were a little cold but that is a one-off, they were just waiting for a shipment from the mainland, and they made up for it with other things. You receive free coffee, tea, sugar, milk and conditioning shampoo with your room, and Woolworths is two blocks away and coles is only one. I definitely recommend it as it is a cheap, friendly and comfortable place. Even has a baggage lift to take luggage upstairs.

I've stayed here many times before. It's in the centre of town, the rooms are fine - less than $80 for ensuite double. It's clean and generally comfortable. The room is a bit small and the bathroom a little cramped but you're not living there. The last couple of times the staff have been really pleasant and friendly, so maybe it depends who is on duty (saw rudeness in one review) However the second last stay there was a terrible noise from aircon compressors (?) (room 20a) that kept us awake. Eventually I was able to drown it out with a sleep app on the ipad. The next visit and in a different room the nightclub was a bit noisy and the ipad did the trick again. Staff warned about the nightclub. The place was full so we couldn't get another room. Free wifi but there's often difficulty with getting it to work. Not sure what I'll do on my next visit because without the noise it's perfectly fine. I've paid heaps more for far worse places

Room Tip: check about the aircon and nightclub noise

The hotel is well located in the centre of town and has an interesting history but it's budget rather than a charming. Our room was cramped as was the ensuite. There is a lift for the bags but guests have to walk upstairs. There was no view from the window apart from a bed in a room opposite, we could hear our neighbour in the shower and a machine - maybe a generator - kept up for some hours. That said, the place was clean and the beds comfortable.

Paid $120 for a room with 3 beds + ensuite bathroom. Had reverse cycle air con, tv & tea & coffee making facilities. Furniture was coated in a thick layer of dust like it hadn't been wiped over for quite some time. One look at the shower & we were off to buy bleach to get rid of the nastiness that was growing in the shower tracks & up the shower door. Having a shower turned out to be a fairly tricky experience with the water constantly fluctuating from freezing to scalding hot. The drain in the cubicle was clogged up & didn't drain so you were swilling about in dirty soapy water for the duration. There was also nowhere to hang anything in the bathroom. The tap in the sink wouldn't turn off fully - it was running when we arrived & still was when we checked out because we weren't able to shut it off. Obviously being "water wise" isn't high on their list of priorities. Was pretty noisy until late into the night - banging doors, people talking etc. but I suspect that may be the norm in this type of accommodation. However, beds were reasonably comfortable. Ii is in a good location, handy to places to eat and a large supermarket, all within walking distance. I think had it have been cleaned to a better standard & a bit of basic maintenance done, the place would be vastly improved.

Dear Suzy3065,
Thanks for taking the time to leave your review. Had you informed reception of your concerns, we could have had someone take a look into your room. If the mould was so bad as you say it was, reception should have been informed. The hot water system has undergone an upgrade and this is not an issue anymore. We have had the drain checked and cleaned from any debris. We find the statement about the dust to be untrue as our wonderful house keeping team clean the rooms daily. We inspected the room after check out and found there to be not as much dust as you say there was. There is some dust given it is an old building but nothing too bad. We can not control the noise of other guests in the hotel. Closing doors and people talking are something that is totally unavoidable and is the "norm" in any hotel. We are lucky to be so centrally located and close to retail shops and supermarkets. We thank you for your stay and hope to welcome you back sometime in the future.

Staff are unhelpful and know nothing about the area, are rude and slow, often taking smoking breaks maybe every 15 minutes. The bedrooms are crampt and dirty with cold showers and poor ventilation. Common areas are dirty, especially the unhygeinic kitchen area, risky to cook food. I tried to do laundry, cost $10 to do two loads, one came out covered in stains and the other with ripped clothes. Staff refused to accept responsibility for faulty machines, didn't apologise or even offer a refund for the $10, and went so far as to accuse me of bringing ripped and stained clothes to them as a scam for money, despite the clothes being wet and that they sold me washing powder an hour earlier. I was promised an email to resolve the issue as I had to move on to my next destination, however I never received any communication. All in all a pretty vile place to stay, would recommend the Arthouse Hostel only a few minutes away. Do not stay at this property.
