Owner description: DownsSteam is a community based solely volunteer run organisation dedicated to the establishment of a tourist railway for the Darling Downs region. DownsSteam was formed to enable the preservation and active restoration of the last remaining steam locomotive built at the historic Toowoomba Foundry Company, C16-106 Southern Cross Works No. 28 circa 1914. DownsSteam plans to run regular passenger services that would become part of an integrated tourism transport trail across the Darling Downs. Fine food excursions to Warwick and Stanthorpe will give our guests the opportunity to sample the best our region has to offer. Shorter trips to Nobby and Pittsworth will celebrate our regions rich heritage. Since formation in 2001, DownsSteam has established an active railway precinct on the former Drayton sidings & acquiried a large rolling stock fleet.
Useful Information: Bathroom facilities, Stairs / lift, Wheelchair access

What a fabulous visit which happened just by chance. We were guided round by Peter who shared his enthusiasm and knowledge with us. The volunteers could not have been more helpful and we'll certainly be back. Don't miss the Dreamtime carriage .

this Museum has np entry charge just a gold coin donation of your choice. It is operated by a team of hard working volunteers who take pride in what they do and are proud of what has been achieved. The work is still going on down on the workshop, with volunteers putting together old trains and wonderful plans ahead for their use.
the stand out feature is the DreamTime carriage, which has been completely painted with the aboriginal story of the beginning of time, each painting is wonderful and as you move down through the carriage the whole story surrounds you. All this was painted by a local aboriginal man, and the guide is only too pleased and proud to tell you his story. I first went there with a group of ladies, had a tour of the whole facility and then had a beautiful lunch served to us in one of the old carriages.. if in Toowoomba do go there,, dont miss it,, you will be so pleased you did.But check times as it is only open three days a week.

Fantastic ground-up, community effort. The selfless work of the volunteers - from ordinary citizens to students to commercial enterprises - brings this attraction to another level altogether.

We have attended a couple of functions at Downs Steam Museam and were blown away by the achievements of a group of dedicated volunteers. They have managed to rebuild from the ground up, a place where train enthusiasts can embrace yesteryear and at the same time enjoy a wonderful meal, or just a coffe, drink and snack.

Their passion continues as they set themselves more projects and I would recommend that you phone them to gather information about any forthcoming steam train trips they may have on their calendar. A place to enjoy something out of the ordinary!
