I was referred to this restaurant by a friend who read about this place in a magazine review. It stands by itself in Port Kembla (not far from the beach) and although it is a bit out of the way, it is definitely worth a try. The menu had a familiar Spanish feel with Tapa's & Paella with Pizzas for the non-adventurous.
We had Chicken Croquettes, BBQ Octopus, Tortilla & Vongle. All four servings were generous by Tapa size standards and they were all very tasty and filling (2 people - 4 Tapas) The waiter was quite novel and loved a chat and handled the near full restaurant pretty well by himself. The restaurant is BYO
The restaurant has a nice front deck which would be good in summer, but it wasnt being used during our visit due to the weather (I dont know if it is regularly used) I noticed that the restaurant is not open early in the week (cant remember trading days) so check before heading out.
Well worth a try if you enjoy Spanish food in a non-rushed atmosphere

Coming from a spanish background we all love coming here, it is an experience just like eating at a families house and the food is authentic and delicious. There are some bad reviews on service and at an ordinary restaurant I would agree but this is a such a unique place and I woukd hate to see it change.

Here are my tips below.

The family that run their own place are fantastic, when you come here prepare to wait up to an hour for food, bring some wine relax and socialize with family and friends with this time.

Imagine your family cooking for 100 people and your grandfather (no offence intended) taking orders because that's what happens here. Despite the chaos the family always have a big smile on their faces and seem to really love their job, over the years as customers we have learned that this family barely scrape it in finacially and are not interested in commercialization of their unique place. Keep this gem as it is please.

We always have a great night here and plenty of laughs as we usually polish off a few bottles of red before our food arrives.

If you want a great family night here bring some drinks and imagine being in spain there is no other place I've visited quite like this one.

The food is absolutely great. The service is so so so so terrible. You have to book because they don't like walk ins. When you book nobody answers, so you have to leave a message and they ring to back to let you know if you can eat there. They call you half an hour before you booked to tell you they are full. You drive passed and there's about 8 free tables all night. When you arrive they demand to know if you have booked and also if you have been there before. You have to order some meals a day in advance. They get mad if you order pizza or Schnitty off the menu, because "we are a tapas bar". You can never tell when they are open for business because their hours are so erratic. Decor inside is horrible and ugly.

They are only nice if you have been there 1000 times before, if you book and pre order and only order from the tapas section in the menu. And take cash. It can be quite enjoyable if you abide by the odd rules.

This is our 3rd visit & we would recommend Café la Playa to anyone.
Staff very friendly. We had been told on our previous visit that the octopus had run out because it was very popular so when we made our reservation we put in our order for 2 serves of the octopus & we were not disappointed. We love tapas as you get a excellent variety of the food on offer. Will try a paella when we get through all the different tapas.
