“Beautiful views, lovely room”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 January 2012

We stayed two nights in the lodge part of the accomodation. Price includes breakfast and free run of the castle and gardens.

We had the NZ themed room and it was very nice. There was one double bed and one single which was perfect for my mother and I. The beds were comfy, the bathroom was very nice and the balcony had stunning views across the harbour and peninsula. The tea and coffee facilities were very much appreciated and topped up every day. Breakfast was very good - a good selection in the buffet and nicely cooked items on request, all included. Staff were very helpful and friendly.

We went round the castle while we were there. It's nice but coming from a land of proper castles I would say it was more of a stately home. But it was nicely decorated and a beautiful building nonetheless. The gardens are a delight and nice to walk around on a sunny day.

Some people have mentioned the roads to the castle, they were bendy and some on the edge of a steep cliff. Having driven down them in some thick cloud that came down while we were staying I would say ther are nothing to worry about if you drive carefully and you get used to it quickly.

We explored the Otago peninsula and popped into Dunedin, both of which were easily accessible from the castle.

Overall I would recomend the castle as somewhere to stay, we had a lovely time.

We stayed at the Stables at Larnach Castle - it was titled budget accommodation it it was wonderful! Not what I would really consider budget at all.
The old stables building has several rooms (ours slept 4) and a nice dining hall type of thing downstairs. A view of the amazing bay below is only steps away.
The staff were so friendly and the breakfast the next morning was cereal, fruit etc and to as well! You also get a free self guided tour of the Castle and grounds. Absolutely loved it!

Stayed in the stables. Service from staff at arrival was excellent. Room was small but this was expected. Only issue with staff service was at breakfast - the staff member serving was so engrossed in conversation about local attractions with customers at other table that we had to wait around for a long time and eventually interrupt her to get breakfast cereal bowls and our orders taken. On the positive side the food was good.

We travelled as a couple in January and enjoyed a 1 night stay at the Lodge on a wet and windy night. The 'Sea Room' was great, great views over the Peninsula, seperate bathroom, good ameniities, and very clean. We also booked dinner in the Castle. At 7pm we had drinks on the Castle verandah and at 7:30 dinner was served in the Piano Room. The menu was ample, and the food was excellent. The castle and grounds are free to wander before the public admission in the morning and breakfast is included in the rate. The Duty Manager for the Lodge was Graham, and he did everything possible to make our stay an unforgetable experience.

We were made to feel quite welcome and were shown into our room. Our garden-themed room overlooked the harbour and it was lovely after a long day of travel to walk through a beautiful garden (look out for the Alice in Wonderland references).

Dinner at the castle was a true highlight of our journey - a relaxed meal with fellow travellers and an interesting insight into the history of the castle from a warm and friendly hostess.
