Owner description: Quake City tells stories of heroism, hope and loss from the Canterbury earthquakes. This special exhibition from Canterbury Museum explains the science and the phenomenon of liquefaction – when the shaking liquefied the ground and it bubbled up burying street and sinking buildings. Quake City charts the aftermaths of the September 2010 and 22 February 2011 earthquakes and the extraordinary response of the emergency services, international rescue teams, the thousands of volunteers who pitched in to help – construction workers, the Student Volunteer Army, the Farmy Army – and the incredible resilience of Canterbury’s communities. Exhibition includes some of the objects which have defined the Canterbury earthquakes including the spire of ChristChurch Cathedral and the railway station clocks which stopped at 12.51 pm on 22 February 2011. The rebuild section of the exhibition brings the visitor up to date with progress in regenerating the city and the recovery projects underway.

In Australia we saw the video footage on the news for a few days and then forgot about Christchurch. We had visited prior to 2010 and to return and see the city was shocking.
This small museum is outstanding in the way that it tells the story of the quakes. You get a very real sense of what people went through and the ongoing after effects on the city and its people. This centre is an amazing tribute to a city that is trying to rebuild. The displays and videos allow us to share a small amount of the pain the people have been through.
If you are visiting Christchurch it’s a must.

The Quake Museum gives you the full explanation of the recent earthquakes in their historical and geotechnical setting. It has varied displays, and videos of personal experiences so you get the full picture of the effect on the city and the people. Suitable for all ages.

Although it may be informative for others who live outside Canterbury, my daughter & I found it was lacking a lot of depth. There was so much more which could have been included in the experience. A lot more photographs could have been available for a start.

This is a very moving and informative account of the earthquake of 2011. We found the commentaries of those affected particularly moving. I know some people have commented on the entrance fee saying it was on the high side but we thought it well worth the price. The staff were excellent here, too.

Went to this to get a perspective of the events directly affecting the city. Very moving and gave a great insight into what happened and to what the city are doing to prepare for the future
