“Perfect sanctuary which renewed our jaded city spirits. We loved it!”

Woodside Cottage was a delight in every way. We booked for 3 nights and stayed for 4. Emaculately clean and exactly as described on the website. We arrived to find clumps of snowdrops in the home paddock, quietly grazing sheep adding to the rural seaside ambiance and the cottage had an open fire, comfortable beds with feather duvets and electric blankets and we slept like logs. Our hostess Nic stocked the kitchen with home baked goodies, delicious breakfast supplies and flowers from the much loved garden. Finding the beach was easy with the graded lawn path and ours were the only footsteps on the beach. Sept 4, 5, 6 & 7, 2010.

We stayed two nights at Woodside Cottage during a family holiday to New Zealand in August, and would have gladly stayed a few nights longer as we were enjoying the experience so much. About 45 minutes north from Kaikoura, the cottage is certainly secluded, but for us that was part of the appeal of the place. The directions given by the host were easy enough to follow (it's about five minutes up the coastal road from The Store, a gourmet cafe that's also seemingly in the middle of nowhere). Woodside Cottage has a whole beach to itself with stunning view of the surrounding hills and snow-capped Kaikoura mountain range in the distance. The long black-sanded beach is desolate, wild and strewn with driftwood, with a colony of seals at one end. The path to the beach was a well-marked.

We arrived to find the Cottage ready for us, and the requested breakfast provisions were excellent. There was plenty of wood cut for the open fire, and the bedrooms were cosy and comfortable with good quality linen. The host appeared the next morning with fresh flowers and muffins, which we enjoyed. She also told us about a nearby forest walk to a pool under a waterfall where baby seals frolic and play. Going to see this extraordinary sight was a highlight of our visit to NZ, along with a whalewatching trip in Kaikoura.

Liked — The location!
Disliked — Kitchen does not have a microwave or a dishwasher

I was somewhat worried about our upcoming two night stay at Woodside Cottage last week after reading the only other TripAdvisor review, which found the cottage wanting. To my overwhelming relief, our stay was flawless. We had no issues finding it, as it is the only cottage in the area. There were fresh flowers in every room, the accommodations were spotless and tasteful, and the quality of the heavily stocked fridge was more than the two of us were able to eat. Fresh fruit, free-range eggs from the owner's chickens, meats and fresh herbs completed our breakfast. The butter was so rich we initially thought it was cheese! The owner even checked in on us to ensure that we weren't lacking anything. I found the path to the beach easy and well-marked, and the beach itself deserted except for the colony of fur seals down a ways to the north. We stayed here while visiting Kaikoura for the whalewatch, and after seeing the touristy development that characterised Kaikoura, we were glad we did. I can't recommend this place enough.

  • Liked — The incomparable natural setting
  • Disliked — The outdoor grill wasn't very powerful.

My wife and I stayed at the Woodside Cottage on the Kaikoura coast of New Zealand's South Island in late September of 2005. Seclusion is the calling card of the cottage as it is extremely hard to find from the main road (directions literally call for driving down a gravel path bordering the local wool shed). The cottage is cozy and relatively comfortable (firewood was provided as were breakfast staples in the fridge). There is also a nice restaurant 5 minutes (south) up the road called The Store.

All that being said, my wife and I both found the absolute seclusion a little creepy. In addition, the nightly rate isn't an especially good deal considering that the facilities are relatively meagre, the only ocean views from the cottage are in one corner of the kitchen and that you must cook a basic breakfast (no cheese or fruit) yourself in a dated kitchen. In addition, it isn't easy to access the beach (involves walking through a tangled and poorly marked path), the cottage is cold at night and the shower is literally outdoors. Compared to many of the other B&B's we stayed in on the South Island, this one rates somewhat unfavorably.
