Indian restaurants can be much of a muchness - Planet Spice was a bit different. Most noticably decor was bright, fresh and cheery and wait staff who served us and that we saw serving, weren't Indian.

We received a cheerful welcome which was promising but service was pretty bland after that, though one lady did check in to see how everything was and too ask if we needed anything.

We ordered vegetable navratan, rogan josh and sag wala - all good. The vegetable navratan had a few paneer cubes in it which was a nice surprise but was mild, despite ordering 'hot'. The sag wala was fine apparently but not particularly creamy according to my friend. The lamb rogan josh was enjoyed very much.

Food was served on cheap and cheerful white plates, meals arrived in the typical copper(?) bowls with little handles.

We all loved the garlic naan - heaps of garlic, joyfully buttery but not too oily - perfect. Rice was good too. We had a couple of beers - all up just over $80 which we thought was pretty good.

Had a good range of beers including IPAs, APAs and also wines and cider.

It was a chilly evening. We sat by the door which meant we were cold everytime someone entered the restaurant but, there was a gas heater pumping out warmth positioned above the door which kept us comfortable and warm.

I would eat here again for sure though I'd be really really really clear about wanting 'hot' so this wasn't overlooked next time.

Look, I'm English, curry is a natuinal dish and our expectations are high. So, when I say that this is one if the best Indian restaurants around, it takes a lot. Whenever I visit Wellington, I always pay this place a visit (landed at 4PM, there by 530) and recommend it to anyone.

The service is constantly excellent and the wait staff will give you the day's specials consistently. Wait times have never been long and drinks come quickly - a modest yet still eclectic range if beers - while the starter arrives in good time. I'll always go for the Onion Bhaji, which is enough for two to share. The curries come at the requested spiciness, so, be warned, you ask for hot, you get hot. Naan bread is ample and it is difficult to leave any of the meal uneaten.

Situated in Newtown, it isn't far from the city centre - 10 minutes by bus - and even worth a modest cab ride.

Our party of four voted it the best Indian food they had eaten in a long while. Very well presented and the BYO option made it very affordable. Very prompt and friendly service make it a must do.

Walking around Newtown, I got hungry and went to the first place I came and this was Planet Spice. At first, I thought it would be very spicy (because of the name), but they ask you the range of spice you want to have it on your meal. That's something to take in consideration when you go to a new restaurant and don't know how hot their food really is.
