“weekend break”
Reviewed 12 September 2012

Went for one night to watch AllBlack test, hotel well located for this, although you have to be prepared to walk or taxi back up to Courtney Place for nightlife afterwards. Very quiet down Lambton Quay/Terrace as it is the business district. The bonus is a good nights sleep.
Couldn't get access card to work at lambton Quay so had to walk around and up the hill.

overall good location, upgraded rooms and efficient staff.

This hotel is in a great central location. It can either be accessed by car or foot from The Terrace, or there is also a lift that takes you to/from Lambton Quay the main shopping street in Wellington.

I found the staff to be friendly and helpful.

This hotel is located in an older building that has been refurbished. We saw a few of the rooms and they were all a similar size - they have enough space but are not large.

The rooms on the sea side of the building will have a glimpse of the sea, although a large building blocks a large part of the view.

Annoyingly, not only was the wifi not free but was quite pricey. I presume this is mostly targeted at the business traveller.

But overall a nice clean comfortable place to stay, as you would expect from the Accor chain.

The guest services staff tried to charge for items that had not been used from the mini bar. The staff did not charge me but it still made me feel very uncomfortable that they thought I had taken things I hadn't. They need better systems for this as it is very unpleasant for a guest to be questioned.

On check in I enquired and it was confirmed that I had breakfast included so I got up & checked out half an hour early only to be advised that this was not included on my second night of stay.

As I had already checked out I was left to sit in the lobby whilst other guests dined. I specifically enquired on arrival if breakfast was included both days and advised yes. There was no apology for this error and I would have preferred the extra half hour sleep
Before an early flight.

The rooms are adequate, Internet use in rooms is very expensive. Overall I would not stay again.

Dear Travelweave,
Thank you for taking the time to post your feedback following your recent stay with us.

Please accept our sincere apologies for not providing the kind of service and facilities that you would rightfully expect from us. I can assure you we work very hard to ensure all guest services are clearly explained on check-in to avoid any confusion and I am at a loss as to why we failed on this occasion. I will ensure your comments are passed onto both my Reservations and Front Office teams to ensure incidents such as you experienced do not occur again in the future.

Once again, thank you for providing such valuable feedback.

This hotel is extremely well situated for taking the airport bus to and from the city. Extremely central hotel. As for the room: it was clean but the decor was dated. I do believe there are newly refurbished rooms so it may be a good thing to ask. As an Advantage Plus member of many years I would have thought we would be booked into a better room but alas, that was not the case. I am often amazed at the difference between the photos on the web and the reality. Unfortunately when flushed, the toilet made a noise resembling a cow in labour which was really annoying, especially in the middle of the night.
We had dinner at the restaurant which was very good with friendly waiting staff. Breakfast unfortunately was mediocre and I would expect more of this hotel.

Our latest visit to this hotel was booked some weeks beforehand as members of Advantage Plus through their Internet site, and was faultless, with confirmation and receipt emailed back to us within seconds. The member price being $NZ169 for the night, including breakfast for two.

Check-in was fast, with the friendly and efficient attention we have come to expect from this hotel chain, and within minutes we were established in our room on the eighth floor. It was obvious that this whole floor had been re-furbished very recently – everywhere had the clean and fresh odor of new paint and furnishings. Our room was immaculate, with the very best of new-age decoration, and a beautifully comfortable ‘space-age’ bed. More importantly perhaps, everything, from the air-conditioning to the lighting, was simple to operate and easy to understand, even without reference to the TV displayed operation manual.

The one incongruous note was a wood and steel combination chaise-lounge/easy-chair/table that was both space devouring and hideously uncomfortable. One can only admire the skills of whoever sold perhaps hundreds of these to the hotel. Frankly, they should be consigned to the basement storage and replaced with one easy chair. Then, the switching for the standard lamp will be accessible.

Dining at this Novotel is always a pleasant experience, although our choice of the ‘seafood surprise’, based on Terekahi, was certainly a surprise, being not surrounded by an assortment of sea delicacies, but served on a rice base with a brown sauce and two very small fragments of battered squid. Adequate enough though, and the fish was delightful.

Breakfast, although a little late in arriving at 6.45 am, had everything a dedicated breakfaster could wish for, although it had not been made clear to us that Accor have discarded their system of both ‘continental’ and ‘full’ breakfasts, and now do the whole bit at around $NZ30 pp.

Note that a very useful amenity at this hotel is the separate elevator, which goes directly from the dining room to Lambton Quay, saving a very tedious climb for shoppers and adventurers.

Checkout was equally slick, with friendly baggage service right to the taxi door. Be aware that this hotel, among others in the chain, now charges a fee to use your credit card in payment of your account. In my view, a rort. Seemingly, Accor, like many other business entities, use the excuse of the economic downturn to increase prices. Not a good look, and which is why I score this hotel an eight out of ten, rather than the nine it should have.
