Not used to hostels but pleasantly surprised with the friendly atmosphere and camaraderie between travellers and staff. Rooms are basic but clean. Slept very well. Genuine backpackers seemed to enjoy cooking in the large kitchen/dining area and gathering at the bar. Free internet and advice on things to do in the area. Plenty of good eateries nearby. The staff seem to know all the adventure/trip organisers and put you in touch in no time. After traveling for 6 weeks we returned for a few more days before leaving NZ.

Room Tip: Try a smaller room on ground floor if in budget.

Surprisingly for a busy hostel, there was no noise to keep us awake at night. We stayed in a double ensuite which was clean with a comfortable bed. The staff were friendly and helpful, giving advice on trips and adventures. (See photos). The $5 chilli meal in the evening was very popular and the bar seemed to be have the best prices in town. We walked to the lake and Huka fallsand the bungy jump and enjoyed sailing on the lake and visiting many attractions in the area. The bus collected us from the hostel to take us to the Tongariro Crossing. A half day climb with wonderful views. This is an ideal place to stay for the budget conscious.

Centrally locate in town, one block from Lake Taupo. Easy acces to walks to Huka Falls, bungy jump and hot spa. Very popular as full each evening. Friendly staff and advice on trips etc with booking facilities. A $5 chilli meal in the evening, bar and free internet. We secured a double room en-suite which was a bonus.

This hostel is very central, although it’s difficult in Taupo to be far away from the centre as far as hostels are concerned. Despite its central location, it’s quiet enough, a few streets away from bars and restaurants.

The hostel feels crowded when fully booked, which was the case when we were staying there. The kitchen is small in relation to the hostel’s overall capacity, and wasn’t very clean. However, the dining area with big wooden tables and benches is very nice. There’s also an outside sitting area in the little front garden. There’s also a bar in the sitting/dining area, and a pool table which makes it a social place to hang out in the evening.

My friends and I stayed in a 4-bed dorm, which was small but well ventilated. Beds were bunks, rather noisy, and not too comfy, but I’ve slept in worse beds. Bathrooms were clean and modern.

All in all, it’s an ok place for a night. It’s cheaper than most other hostels, central, and social, but if you’re looking for a more homey atmosphere, with less people or something relaxed and quiet, choose somewhere else. I'm not sure the hostel accepts bus crowds, but the crowd was certainly very young (early twenties).
