“Homely stay in Rotorua”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 March 2012

I travelled to New Zealand in January 2012 & for the most part, stayed with friends. I did not know anyone in Rotorua so googled the places to stay. Faith from Rotorua Motor Lodge was incredibly quick to reply to my email & to further queries. When I said that I was arriving by coach at the opposite end of Fenton Street, she arranged to pick me up. I did not have a laptop, so was allowed to check email on their computer. Nothing was too much for Faith & Tim in my 2 day stay & I would highly recommend their motel. Even with the exchange rate, the cost did not blow my budget either.

The owners, Tim and Faith, say that they want to make the Motor Lodge the best budget accommodation in Rotorua. We think they're doing a great job at reaching that goal.

Tim gave us a friendly welcome on arrival. We had just gone to our room (which surprised us with its cleanliness) when Tim knocked on the door and offered us a free upgrade to a larger family suite, seeing as it was a special occasion for us and we were staying for several nights. What a nice surprise! Both rooms were spotless and well-appointed. The motel looks to have been painted recently, furnishings were plush and comfortable, and the sheets on our bed were a joy to slip into. We didn't try the hot pool or outdoor swimming pool, but we could see from our room that many guests made use of these and that the pools are kept clean.

As others have noted, the motel looks over a petrol station to the lake beyond. The curtains in both rooms were more than adequate at blocking light and a fair bit of sound, (I'm sure the concrete construction of the building helps too) and actually, we weren't bothered by the petrol station at all. In any case, the Lodge offers complimentary ear plugs in case of "noisy sleeping partners". The positives of the location: coffee next-door, sunset over the golf course across the road, being slightly removed from the busyness of town, and being a stone's throw from a famous geyser.

We figured we could get a low-end hotel or a high-end motel for the same price. We definitely made the right choice. I hope fellow travellers will reward Tim and Faith's hard work with their custom.

Room Tip: Rooms on the top floor have the best view of the lake.

Arrived in Rotorua for the Ragga Muffin music festival from Melbourne, Australia and we found this hotel the last minute on the net. we, a girlfriend and i, didnt want anything too expensive and found this for $150 per night and was expecting a crappy hotel.

When we arrived the outside didnt look the greatest but we were greeted by a very lovely lady who was very helpful. she checked us in and when enquiring about places to eat and sights to see she gave us some great info! We also requested an iron, and in no time to us actually getting into our room she had brought us up an iron and ironing board! While checking in we also enquired about a taxi and she told us that in our rooms info book, we could find the number there. she had gone out of her way and rang us up with a taxi number. we were very appreciative of the service and help.

When we had booked 2 seperate beds were requested and we got those. when we got into our room we walked into a very spacious and clean room! There is free internet, basic kitchen facilities and a decent size fridge! Free set box for the tv and a great bathroom!

My friend and i would recommend this hotel to anyone! The location is a bit of a walk ibto town but its quiet and enjoyable. we had room 20.

Very happy to come back here again! A pleasure :)

I was pleasantly surprised by this place. It was clean and tidy, with comfortable beds, lovely hosts and in a great spot. I was really worried when I saw the BP place so close but it really wasn't a problem. The free internet was very welcome, and the owners are clearly making every effort to make this a top quality budget motel. A classic case of not judging a book by it's cover. We will definitely stay there again.

Stayed at the lodge between Christmas and the New Year , and enjoyed it immensley, Host was very friendly and had a warm manor, Rooms were more than adequate and clean as where the amenities. The area was not as noisy as i had thought with the garage so close but its coffee is a bonus.
