“Stay away!”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 March 2012

I can only suggest you - don't go there. We (a friend of mine and me) we spent 3 nights there. I paid in the beginning, that's why it became 3 nights. To begin: The owner is incredibly unfriendly (making fun about germans in general, and not the sort of funny ones..), not wanting to help us with the kayaks when we wanted to go kayaking (quote: this is free kayaks. you can pay me 10 dollars, then i will help you. this he was yelling to us) and being extremly rude towards my friend (she didn't want to continue working in such a place, so he titled her a liar in front of all the other workers...). The kitchen was always dirty, cockroaches running around. The other visitors were more than strange, i only want to mention a drunken and stoned guy who was either sleeping and snoring on the couch located next to the kitchen or pursuiting us through the whole house as well as another strange guy talking to himself, belching and farting in the kitchen while we were cooking.
i can only suggest you to stay away from that hostel and choose one of the other ones, this one does not deserve to be listed on the bbh-list, although the guests might change. I should also mention that the walls were as thick as paper, so i could either hear my neighbours talk and do other things i might not want to listen to, or the tv located next to our room.

Friendly owner gave us the key to a largish, clean double room on the second floor of the hostel. Only one window made the room quite hot but there were towels, a TV, coffee, tea, milk and kettle. The shower suffered from lack of hot water and pressure in the morning. Just round the corner from the shops, bars and restaurants. There are probably better places to stay.

i stayed here two nights, on the first night the owner/manager advised us to not go to the local bar because it was full of 'half dead people' and how we should stay safe. but we had a fun night there and on the second night we were hanging out with a guy we met at local place the previous night, he cam ein to eat some chips with us but we were told by management that they didn't want 'people like that' (ie maori people) in the place because you couldn't trust them and they stole things. we tried to argue with this ignorance/racism but he insisted our friend could not be there. obviously this would have been fine if it had of been him sayin we couldnt have guests because it was against the policy. but he explicitely stated that it was because you couldn't trust maoris etc. and only when we challenged him on this did he say it was hotel policy and he owned the place so he could say who stayed there. i felt sick that i gave him our money! so we left and stayed at my friend's house and there was no refund given even though we didnt stay there that night.
(also on a side note there was only one functional bike for the 'free bikes' thing.) but anyway unless you want to give racist people your money i wouldn't stay here..

Centabay Lodge is well located near the shops and restaurants of Piahia. Just 5 minutes walk from places like the Swiss Café, but just far enough out to avoid the noise from the night life. The hostel itself looks nice from the outside but was otherwise something of a let down. In my 6 months of travelling around New Zealand it’s the only hostel I've stayed at that I wouldn't recommend.

The hostel itself was poorly maintained and cleaned. Toilets were almost uniformly out of toilet paper and the majority had pools of water or urine by the morning. The rooms are small and the walls are thin, allowing you to hear your neighbours conversations easily and denying you a good nights sleep. The beds in our room seemed close to falling apart and creaked at every movement. The kitchen isn't bad but there were so many people stopping at the hostel there wasn't space to cook and we decided to check out and give up on having breakfast.

The state of the toilets is likely due to the guests for that night who all seemed to be in their late teens and spent the night drinking heavily and making as much noise as possible. I've no idea if this is the usual customer base for the hostel but based on my experience I'd strongly suggest families, couples, or people with children avoid this hostel. Similarly anyone wishing to get a good nights sleep should probably look elsewhere.

We had an awesome, super fun time staying at Centabay. The staff was incredibly friendly, our dorm room was comfortable, and we met a lot of fun people. We enjoyed cooking big dinners with fellow guests in the spacious kitchen and then chilling out in the hot tub (major plus.) The location is great (right next to the beach, and to lots of cafes/restaurants) and they had kayaks for us to use free of charge! Paihia was a super fun, beautiful place to visit, and I'm so glad that we made Centabay our base. Much better than other backpackers' hostels I've stayed at.
