Sunderland House

I booked Sunderland cos of their #1 ranking and the pretty pictures of the premier room which comes with a foot-claw bathtub but we(family of 4) were pleasantly surprised and overwhelmed by the treats from Donald – cakes in the afternoon, cookies in the evening and muffins during breakfast – all home-baked by him. We were delighted when Donald packed some extras for us when we left. Donald bakes the best cookies and muffins - they are to die for! I can’t believe I’m still waxing lyrical over this. We had a good stay at Sunderland. The premier and green rooms were beautiful and comfortable. Other than free port and chocs in the rooms, we also had a good selection of tea/coffee and hot chocolate at the pantry. Donald makes a good coffee and was also helpful with directions. His wife Kathy helped too. Thanks for being such great hosts :) Donald, we miss your cookies and muffins! Kathy, we managed to find the Hundertwasser toilets at Kawakawa ;)

We arrived on Nov 8 at Sunderland House, the beginning of a very special trip because we treated us for our 25th wedding anniversary with a voyage to New Zealand and Australia. After a long flight from Canada we felt warmly welcomed right away. There was this little sign standing in the corner of the door with our and other guests names on it. And what a stay it was! We had rented the suite for four nights. Every morning Don treated us with a breakfast at the library in an athmosphere that it was hard to get up and leave....beautifully arranged tables, freshly baked muffins and this wonderful "flat white"...and there were always freshly baked cookies available during the day. Sunderland house has a little aera accessible from all three guest rooms located on the first floor with a fridge and a sink where guests can prepare a coffee or tea or just have a little chat. The room was very clean and you never noticed Don and Kathy's service. We came back during the day or in the evening and everything was magically clean and prepared in our room...wonderful. We must mention that the interior of Sunderland House is beautifully designed and our Suite was perfectly arranged and equipped with all you need to feel at home. Don is very knowledgable about Auckland - we happily followed his advise and had amazing four days in Auckland. We will be back definitly.

What an incredible place to stay, with great hospitality.

We count Donald and Kathy as friends as they welcomed us to new Zealand and helped us through a tough landing!

Great breakfast, snacks all day, and a hammock provide a great setting.

Sunderland House exceeded our expectations. Everything about our stay there was wonderful. Our host Donald was fantastic, nothing was any trouble for him. His wife Kathy was very warm and friendly, but sadly we didn't get to spend much time with her as she is very busy working. Our room was excellent with every comfort provided, including fresh home baking everyday and tea and coffee to help yourself to. We have stayed in many places around the world and I have to say that Sunderland House is up with the very best of them. Parking was easy, lots of places to eat nearby and I could go on. The best thing however, has to be Donald himself. What a really lovely guy, a wonderful host and happy to go the extra mile for his guests. We would certainly stay again if we get the opportunity.

Location:
This B&B is located in a quiet side street but just a five minute walk will bring you to the beach side and a 10 minutes bus ride and you are downtown. There are lots of restaurants within easy walking distance as well.
Hosts:
Don was a wonderful host being extremely helpful with directions to go around and for the restaurants nearby always willing to help and gave a lot of helpful advice on our travel to the north.
Room: A nice room not too big but spotlessly clean (the green room) and a bath with all needed amenties and a large spatub which was wonderful after an 11 hour flight to Auckland.
Breakfast:
A real large fruit platter, toast, eggs, to your linking, a choice of cereals and freshly made savoury muffins made for a wonderful start in the day. We had it in the library which is worth a look in itself.
Specials: There is of course the dog which really likes to be patted. We had free port, free chocolate, some wine, some cookies and cake so all in all we were more than happy on that day. We did only try the indian restaurant but can fully recommend that. Only 500m of walking and very reasonable prices for good inidan food.
