“Breathtaking views”
Review of Vertigo Climb

Vertigo Climb
Reviewed 13 January 2005

I only popped in to enquire and so good was the pitch that I signed up then and there. Lockers are available for valuables and also a toilet for that last minute visit. They only take small groups, and they don't get much smaller than one, me! After being togged out in 'fetching' orange coveralls, a hard hat and harness you are shown a safety video then if necessary provided with spectacle cords to prevent losing them when up high. Also because of this risk of falling objects unfortunately you can't take a camera with you. To get to your starting point you use the same lifts that the other tourists use, so get used to some funny looks.
Your guide takes you through a locked door to a metal ladder and the start of the climb. The safety aspect has been well thought out, your harness is attached to you using a screw clip that can't be opened by hand, and you are attached to the wire ropes that run beside the ladder by a 'pulley' system that will automatically lock down should you slip. My guide told me at each rest stop that I was climbing too fast, but I just couldn't go any slower. There is no pressure on the climber to get on with it, so it is suitable for the exercise challenged, and all ages from 6 to 88. At the half way point a very welcome glass of chilled water is provided.
At the 'top' you are attached to a different harness and allowed out onto the platform where absolutely breath taking views await. They allow 2 hours for each climb so you are able to spend quite a long time at the top. The company have attached orange plastic around the tower at this point so when you are on the ground you can see where you were. (binoculars needed)
Don't worry about not having your camera because your guide takes a digital camera and at several points along the way takes posed snaps, which of course are available to buy.
The price includes a ticket to visit the tower at another time, and a small souvenir of this amazing attraction.
