Hwaro is located at the Spencer Street end of Little Bourke Street in Melbourne’s CBD. Our booking was for 7.30pm & there were a couple of parking spots right out the front - lucky day!
A wall of smoke first hit me walking through a big group of people smoking right at the front door! Then inside the restaurant it was like walking in to a smoke filled cave. It took some time to get used to the lack of fresh air.
There is mostly meat on the menu so this place is definitely not suitable for anyone that doesn’t eat meat. Once you order (which was difficult due to the language barrier) the service was super fast. Within a few minutes we had a smoking hot bbq in the middle of our table, a separate table was brought up close to ours & plates of meat were lined up.
The waiters came to put the meat on & turn it over & chop it up with scissors. You then serve yourself the accompanying sides - pickles, kim chi, spring onion & lettuce, which were delicious & a welcome addition to the meat.
The highlight for us was the zucchini pancake & the kim chi pancake - both dinner plate sized & crunchy on the outside, soft & delicious on the inside.
It was odd that there was a $1 surcharge for water (from the tap in a plastic container) - we had to ask 4 times until it was brought to the table. We were also told there was a cost to additional sides - I’ve read reviews here saying it was free. Given that the sides are the only veg component there needed to be more. We only had them brought to the table twice - one small bowl/plate of each. Needed more, there were 5 of us. They were small servings too - you might need a serve of rice each or at least between 2...
The wait staff were mostly friendly, overall it was an interesting experience, definitely visit if you like meat & bbq!
