Bennetts Lane Jazz Club
Reviewed 20 December 2016

I've been a devotee of this great (but little) live jazz venue in inner city Melbourne for many years now and a recent trip had me dropping in mid-week for some live jazz presented by combo leader and horn player John Hoffman and very impressive young vocalist Elly Hoyt. Granted it's a small venue - or in reality 2 small venues - but the intimacy adds to the experience. The clue is to arrive early to get a seat (and please, don't whinge if you don't!)

Great venue, but can get full, so get in early. Wide variety of gigs, very reasonably priced - entry, drinks and eats.

Must come for the music though, not to chat during the set!

Bar staff nice, good selection of wine!

Be prepared to follow the 'thou shall not move or enjoy the music' rule.
We attended the Jim Morrison show on the 10th of September
We arrived reasonably early buuuut still ended up on a bar leaner which was less than comfortable.
The crowd were seated and not a sound or movement was heard/witnessed which I found frustrating (I like to move to music). When we did attempt slight movement other patrons shot a disapproving look back at us.

Bennetts Lane need to sort out the putrid smell emerging from the men's toilet! It's appalling!

Tips: Turn up early for a seat

Stumbled upon Bennetts Lane last night and had a great time! $25 cover, $12 for a glass of wine and it's all so worth it. You can sit at a table or in the back on steps with pillows. Highly recommend if you're looking for live music on the weekend.

"Best Jazz Venue in Melbourne" only if you like standing between the bar and against the wall of the bathroom entry surrounded by pretentious jazz connoisseurs. An hour after the show started the lady at the door did not stop more patrons entering the venue already overcrowded and we were slowly pushed further into the actual toilet. There was no point for us in booking.
My partner is recovering from a broken ankle and was forced to stand for an hour, until the pain became unbearable. They are obviously focused on maximizing profit rather than looking after the patrons comfort and safety. It's a shame as the artist was great.
