Description: Following the Argentine ethos that eating, drinking and most importantly life are there to be enjoyed with friends, family and lovers. From midday to late at night we offer a shared menu bringing people together just like a family Asado in Argentina. Following the Argentine ethos that eating, drinking and most importantly life are there to be enjoyed with friends, family and lovers. From midday to late at night we offer a shared menu bringing people together just like a family Asado in Argentina. In our endeavour to capture the essence of Argentine culture and cuisine, we have imported a bespoke 2.5 metre parrilla charcoal grill, hand made by Pirincho, a lifelong master of the craft. He is regarded as one of the most important parrilla craftsman in the world. Pirincho’s previous customers include former Argentine presidents, the Ferrari workshop in Modena, and the VIP restaurant in the Barcelona FC Stadium.

Booked and great feeling to walk through the throng of people all waiting on a table.

Busy with a real happy buzz. Dim lights and hard to hear but the food is so good it doesn't matter.

Listened to our waiters suggestions and recommendations and had a great meal. Empanadas a lovely start (all meals are for sharing) and we moved through a succession of lovely meats and vegetable all tasting different yet all taking on flavours from the parrilla. Brussel Sprouts, beef short ribs and steak let us feeling very well fed - yet we had to try a dessert. Glad we did. Didn't need it but pancakes with dulce de Leche and ice cream was the perfect ending.

Cocktails to start and a very good bottle of Argentinian Merlot and we walked out into the rain without a care.

Here's the setup - a group of six friends, mainly hungry lads who are pro-carnivore and who do not have many days without a drink in any given month. We have not caught up for a while so we need food, wine, good service and a more than reasonable wine list; after all it's Sunday so we want to make the most of it. One of the group suggests San Telmo, booking made. We're set!

A couple of notes - bookings are essential here. This is a popular restaurant and you do not want to chance them having a free table because chances are they won't. And, it is a steak house people. If you are not into large pieces of perfectly BBQ'd slices of various red meats this really may not be the place for you. Also, as mentioned, it is popular so it is also crowded. Get friendly with the universe and share the space. Lastly, Argentina is known for many fine things but dainty serves and cuisine minceur are not amongst them.

Be hungry! Like meat! Like company! Have fun!

Great, that's the picture. Devin introduces himself as our waiter and this guy is fantastic. Been in Oz for two months from California he's got the balance between friendly banter and being overly familiar set to 'Perfect'. And he knows the menu and the wine list back to front, inside out and top to bottom. So we tell him we are hungry and to just feed us!

Fabulous med-rare meats travel over from BBQ to table accompanied by delicious sides and an almost Noah's flood of Argentinan Pinot Gris and Malbec. It is, dear reader, like all our blessings have come together on this mild Melbourne Sunday afternoon just for us.

Three hours later we are done. A terrific meal, fantastic wines, generous and witty service our troupe of six are happy as can be. And the bill? $130/head! For value for money, for what we ate and drank, and for Devin's fine service its gold star.

Very highly recommended.

My second visit to Melbourne and the second time at San Telmo. The food amazing, the ambience warm and cozy with the wait staff helpful and friendly. Not a cheap restaurant but you get what you pay for and its worth every dollar. Book to ensure a seat as they are busy. Real easy to find down one of the many alleyways. A good evening out guaranteed.

We had couple of cocktails. There were not too many options for vegetarians for meals. Book ahead as it gets quite packed and you will not find seats. Good ambiance and friendly staff.
