If you are from the US let me make this easy. If Guy Fieri ever does a Diners, Drive Ins and Dives episode in Melbourne he should make The Hardware Societe his first stop. The place is incredible. My wife and I spent a week in Melbourne and ended up going to The Hardware Societe three times. Feel free to pick randomly from the menu. You cannot order anything that is not a taste sensation. We had dishes with fried eggs, poached eggs, baked eggs, salmon, pork belly, various greens and assorted spreads. Nothing disappointed. Forget that, nothing was less than exceptional! The service is good even though the place is always mobbed. Save yourself some time waiting at the door and when offered a shared table take it. We met a few very nice couples that way! Everyone there from the staff to the patrons are very friendly.

We popped in for breakfast and could tell it would be good as it was pretty much packed! We were seated pretty quickly. The service was quick and efficient, food was delicious - two of us had the mushrooms and one had the scrambled eggs and all were lovely.
Would go again.

Waitress is rude. We didn't finish our meal, however, she doesn't ask first but took it straight away. And she is continuing come to ask are you ready for order again and again and again. It's really stressful. If we are ready that I'll call her.
The food is nice. Coffee is soso.

Perhaps there's too much hype over Hardware Societe, there was a long queue outside the cafe on a Saturday morning. Almost decided to give it a miss but we realised there was an extension right opposite the original cafe which didn't have any queue!
Apparently the cafe expanded in July this year and the shopfront opposite the original had just almost the same menu, but somehow everyone still preferred to queue at the original address?

Ordered the famous Baked Egg, a warm croissant and cappuccino. The food was no doubt good, but at that price, it better be!

Drop by for a meal if you want to tick it off your Melbourne to-do checklist, and be prepared for a queue. If not, there are many other cafes in Melbourne worth a visit too!

Had breakfast on a week end. busy place, make sure to get there early or you could have to wait to get a table.
Menu is pretty interesting and few dishes actually sound good. We tried a chocolate croffin, the lobster & poached eggs, and the bavarois with almond sables.
I thought that the croffin was superb and I would happily come back for one of these beauties, maybe as a takeout with a coffee, but i was super underwhelmed with the other 2 dishes.
First of all the bavarois arrived looking a bit 'empty', and indeed one of the main elements was missing from the plate ( the almond sable) so we had to request it...and we did well because it was maybe the best part of the dish... not a great start.
then the lobster, 26$ dish...oh dear... well, not much lobster on the plate I am afraid, it was more 2 eggs benedict with a tiny touch of lobster to be honest. and it was not spectacular at all. To me nothing that justified such a price.
To be totally fair in my review, as we walked out we saw other dishes that looked very tasty, and also that came in a more decent portion, so maybe we did not order the right things and just happened to be unlucky with our pick and with the kitchen messing up the bavarois dish...
overall, not a total disaster, but certainly nothing to go crazy about. If i happen to be around I will be happy to buy some of their pastries but that will probably be it for me.
