One of the most amazing libraries in the world. Fascinating contents and jawdropping rooms. State of the art technological facilities too.

Magnificent building and one of Melbourne's attractions. Not only because of its architecture, but because its in the heart of the city and is a hub for all. I've met my classmates here countless times and cannot even begin to tell you what a pleasure it was to study here. The peace and quiet combined with the atmosphere was very conducive to learning. There's free internet for research and not to mention, plenty of books! It was a great way to unwind with books after a long day of classes and I almost never wanted to leave.

What a brilliant library - now i'm going to admit that librarys were where i spent most of my time in detention (after school) but this library has a tonne of history, grab one of the "guides" who are more than happy to assist with any questions - also ensure you go up to the second level as the view is terrific, as well as the secret exhibition (not many people know about it, because they just walk in take a picture and walk out)

Popped in for a very quick glance, stayed 2 hours, which could have been longer. We really recommend this, the actual library and furniture is good to see and there are regular exhibitions.

The State Library of Victoria (SLV) is a gem. The mid 1800s building is truly beautiful, with its magnificent dome over the central reading room.

There are many reasons to visit the SLV. The obvious one is to use the books! Should you require specific texts, it's best to order them in advance, and collect them from librarians at a specific time. Many texts are for use within the building, only, but the website will give you more information.

The second reason is to see the permanent exhibitions on the development of Melbourne, or the life of Ned Kelly, or the history of the printed page/books. These are set in the perimetre of the great dome, so you get to see down onto the wonderful reading room, too.

A third reason is to see temporary exhibits, held on the ground floor. Recently there was a show called; Shop 'Til you drop', which featured the changing face of retail in Melbourne. Illuminated manuscripts have also been the focus of exhibitions, as has been comic strips.

Fourth, fifth and sixth reasons? I could go on and on! There are lectures, film shows and lots of other attractions at our wonderful State Library. Last time I visited with friends from overseas, there was even free icecream, distributed by a person wearing a giant bear suit, in the garden of the Library! The visitors were most impressed!
