“Perfectly acceptable”
Reviewed 29 March 2012

We stayed here on 2 different occasions in March and although paid the same price for our room each time, we had one great room and one only just acceptable.

When you arrive at the hotel, it had a nice tropical feel to it with lush planting and colonial style shutters everywhere. I liked the look of it very much. Location-wise, it's good too - not far to walk to the esplanade and lots of shops - perhaps 5 minutes?

The 1st time round, we were very disappointed in our room. It was rather dusty with a very old looking bathroom. You had to have the shutters closed all the time for privacy as they had a corridor right by the window so everyone could see in. The worst aspect though was the shower which squealed terribly and must have woken up everyone around us. Oh yes, just remembered that next door got up early and decided to smoke outside our room as didn't want their smoke in their room. Not the fault of the hotel though - just thoughtless people.....but a downside of having a corridor room.

However, 2nd time round, we were given a massive room with a double bed and 2 singles. We also had our own private area out the back facing onto a courtyard. It was much cleaner, and although the bathroom did look tired, it worked much better. We were very happy with this room.

As for teas and coffees, these are provided, but were sometimes in the fridge. If not there, you asked at reception as they had an ant problem during our visit so only handed stuff out when it was required. I didn't have a problem with that at all. Also, the kettle and cups were sometimes hard to find, but were always there in the room - it was just a matter of finding the right cupboard.

Other people have commented on the A/C - we found this over efficient and always ended up turning it down.

We thought the breakfast was excellent - lots of fresh fruit. The scrambled eggs had been sitting around a bit, but all the other cooked stuff was fine. It was a lot better than a lot of other hotels we've been to over the past 3 months!

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a private courtyard. Avoid the rooms with windows facing onto the corridor.

My boyfriend and I managed to get a good deal to stay here for one night and treat ourselves to an evening in the city where we didn't have to worry about getting a taxi home. And I must say I'm so glad we did.
The room was a decent size, nice bed and decor, tea and coffee, decent shower and bath. It was nice and peaceful even though our room was by a staircase. But I can see how people are commenting on it not being 4 star. Still, we got a good price, clean sheets, hot water and peace and quiet - everything we wanted!
We ate in the restaurant, and I must say the food was delicious and at a reasonable price. I started with duck and scallops, follow by sirloin steak and ended with the chocolate royale. I couldn't complain about a thing with dinner.
The restaurant was very pleasant feeling nice and bright and airy. We had the buffet breakfast in the morning, which filled all of our requirements sweet and savory!
I didn't deal with any staff other than in the restaurant, and I found all of them to be efficient and friendly without intruding on our privacy.
We didn't use any of the other facilities as we were only staying the one night, but I can honestly say I had a great evening there and would happily return.

When you turn up at this resort the initial impression is promising. Good location ,free smart cars outside reception, quite a presentable receptionand the hotel has a tropical character. Promising you think (and so it should be given the prices). Sadly this was not the case. after this, the experience went downhill and fast. You walk in to your room which is really a small bedroom with a bathroom attached and you go to make yourself a cup of tea and there is nothing. Not a single tea bag in sight, nor any water. I go down to reception and they wordlessly respond by giving me some sachets and then charges for the cold water. You return and lie on your bed and there are two things wrong with this. Firstly I like a firm bed but this was ridiculously hard. However the biggest problem was that there was only one window which had thick slats and you had a choice you either pulled the slats down so no one walking by could see you lying on your bed, or you pulled the slats down and there was no natural light in your room.

There was no way to control the temperature of your air conditioning so I sweated all night. I was then awoken at 7pm (and I am not a light sleeper) by a screeching noise coming from someone using their shower and the cleaners making no attempt to be quiet at this time.

I got up and went for breakfast. Maybe if I had stuck to cereal and fruit I would have been ok. I opted for bacon, sausage and roasted tomatoes. and I had honestly ever tasted anything so bad. It was clearly what was left over from the day before and recooked or their chef should find another vocation.

if this hotel was a budget hotel all of this would be more acceptable, but when there prices are similar to the finest hotels in cairns such as the Sebel or the Casino and the comparison is a joke. the do not deserve your hard earned money. This. Hotel in reality is a budget hotel.

We booked this hotel through an agent, which apparently everyone does. Being there for 6 nights, I can tell you that it is worth avoiding at all costs. Due to tile floors, sliding doors, smokers' balconies, large tour groups, noisy streets, rock-hard beds, and a very poor design, you are destined not to get a good nights sleep. In addition, there is a half flight of steps to the elevator, the pool is tiny, the rooms smell and are dirty, the buffet breakfast for $27.50 is what you get for free at Holiday Inn Express, the staff is unpleasant, and the location is meh.

Room Tip: Find a different hotel.

One night we were having dinner at the hotel restaurant, and suddenly a waiter urged us to go to the reception as we had an urgent call from the Head Manager of the hotel. At first we got scared because we thought something wrong was going on back in Spain, but after we found out that what the problem was. Our card, according to them, wasn’t working and the interrupted our meal in their hotel to go urgently to the reception when we had still other 2 nights to go in the hotel, and we had been there already for other 2 nights. Incredible! After that our meal was cold, and we were upset because of the interruption. We didnt even get an apology about it. For that reason, although the meal was good, we wouldn’t recommend anyone to go to this hotel. We had the impression that they were very distrustfu and rudel and not very nice people to deal with. Not relax and above all don’t let people to enjoy their holidays with these manners.
