“Good location and decent hotel for base in Cairns”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 January 2012

Booked the tradewinds for one night before going on a dive live aboard. Location of the tradewinds is great, right on the esplenade and only a couple of minutes walk to restaurants and bars. I messed up my booking (as i do sometimes!!) but the reception staff sorted it out promptly and were really helpful. Thanks Guys. We had dinner at the inhouse restaurant which was great and being a Rydges member got 20% off all food and stuff consumed at the hotel (you can become a member on arrival and worth it). Room and bathroom did everything you needed them to do and the balcony was nice. The hotel had other ammenities like pool and spas but we didnt use these. If going on a dive boat you may leave too early for breakfast but dont fret they all servce breakfast oncec on board. Definitely stay at again.

Room Tip: Make sure you get a room away from the elevator as we had one right next to it and it was a bit nois...

We often stay at Tradewinds if needing to stay in Cairns for an early morning flight. Also late checkout 12 pm if you ask on check-in.
There are usually well priced last minute specials on rooms - most have a nice view over the esplanade.
We travel with young kids/infants and the rooms are big enough for all of us - if not a little dated. Right beside muddy's playground for the kids to get wet and cool down. The hotel pool is also good for small kids with a gentle slope - Rydges supplied inflated toys over these past school holidays.
You have to pay for underground parking but there's plenty of street parking but it tends to fill up at the end of the day.

My Sister and i stayed in the Rydges Tradewinds for one night when we visted Cairns and although we got the room on a deal through Travel Zoo and paid less, i would still have expected the same service had we of paid full price!
We had to get up at 3am to catch our flight to Cairns and so when we arrived at the hotel we were obvioulsy rather tired! After nipping out for some brekkie and little slightseeing we decided to come back for a nap and discovered that we had been put in a room directly above some renovation works that were going on, and the drilling was so loud it felt as though they were about to break through our walls.
Considering the hotel looked fairly quiet and it was not peak season, when we phoned reception to ask to be moved (after explaining our situation) we were told no, and that it wouldn't last for more than 1 hour....it went on for at least another 2-3! Given the size of the hotel, i find it hard to believe that there were no other rooms available on the other side of the complex.
Unfortunatly on this occassion i can say that i will not be staying at this hotel again. i understand that works do need to be carried out, but they should think more carefully before putting people in rooms that back straight onto it!

Dear katharine_franks

Please let me aplogise most sincerely for the inconvience that our renovations caused you. We were certainly busier over this period than expected, but we did keep tradesmen only working between 9.00am and 5.00pm to try and lesson any inconvience.

Once again let me apologise most sincerely.

Kind Regards

Matthew

We stayed for one night in an Ocean View Room with a fantastic view of the Esplanade. The pool is inviting and there was plenty of parks on the street so I didn't pay for valet parking. The staff were friendly and helpful. The beds are very comfortable and my teenage son wants to buy their pillows for home! The room's decor and carpet are a bit dated so I was a bit disappointed when I first saw the room but it was still okay and clean. There was a musty smell each time we entered the room but it wasn't overpowering. The shower head holder was broken so the shower faced the wall so we had to hand hold it. I reported it to the lady at reception who was friendly and noted it down to get it fixed. Breakfast was disappointing as the "hot" food was overcooked and only warm and the juice, butter and milk wasn't chilled enough and been left out at room temperature for the entire breakfast session but the concept of it is a great idea and you really feel like you are on holidays sitting in the restaurant looking out onto the water. The location is great and it's only a five minute walk to the swimming lagoon, the night markets and all the restaurants on the Esplanade. Overall, we enjoyed our short stay at this hotel.

Room Tip: Ocean View room has wonderful view of the Esplanade and you can watch everyone walking and jogging a...
