“Great location; beautiful views”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 June 2012

This hotel wa booked through a work function; so I'm unsure of pricing and value for money. We stayed on the top floor, with beautiful views of the marina and parks, with mountains in the background. Staff are friendly, bar/restaurant downstairs has great service and lovely evening bar tenders. It's a pretty old hotel, needs a bit of a make over but clean, comfy and everything you want for a room you hardly spend time in on holiday!

We arrived at The Marina with experiential knowledge of the Shangri-La culture only to have it dashed like a breaker on the Outer Reef at low tide: it would appear that their Cairns property subscribes to being quite laissez-faire when it comes to relations with its guests.

Although the casual approach can be forgiven in Oz(?), one wonders how Management at The Marina could expect travelled Golden Circle members staying in the Horizon Club to overlook both check-in and check-out not being conducted at the Club desk but standing in the Lobby and being attended by a rather boorish member of staff who unnecessarily insisted on advising me that my credit card would need to be pre-authorised for an amount that came to 33% over the tariff for our four night stay: surely, unnecessary for guests who have already resided seventeen nights at six stays so far this year and have eleven confirmed nights at four further hotels and resorts later this year with Jade status.

It was, however, a delightful surprise to arrive at our splendid room and find a waiting birthday gift of a bottle of Hardy's sparkling waiting in an ice bucket along with kind greetings from General Manager, George Wee, and another from The Marina Staff... and, what a room!

Although a standard Horizon Club Room it consisted of fifty-six square metres of heaven... and the extremely spacious under-cover balcony had a very pleasing aspect over Marlin Marina; in fact, the marina could be viewed from any point in the room with a picture window set-in the bathroom wall at the rear of the bed-sitting room - I've uploaded some photos to illustrate this.

The evening meal at North Food & Wine was delightful... however, when I proffered a USD100 Golden Circle voucher as part payment of the AUD220+ bill it was refused(!) and, I once again had to front the lobby desk to sort the matter out with that boor - thankfully another staff member simply took the voucher, photocopied it, advising me that he'd deduct it from our final account.

It would appear that in-house training stops at how to be laissez-faire.

The cafeteria style set-up of The Horizon Club was less than welcoming; but the staff were, as well as being attentive without intrusion. There were the usual varied selection of tit-bits to savour pre-dinner and a good but not excessively variety of breakfast choices to be had in the mornings.

Yet, the Club wasn't open during the day for complimentary refreshments as is published and, also, expected... perhaps, as was expressed by a receptionist at check-out, because Shangri-La in Oz can't afford the myriad of staff that are to be found to pamper and spoil guests when they stay in Asia(!?).

On another occasion, we'd planned to have a light lunch around the pool after a morning chasing crocodiles only to arrive at the Poolside Bar to find it totally unattended and, after waiting for quite some time, gave up and instead, strolled along the Pier to one of the many cafe/restaurants to be found there.

Apart from my criticism outlined above, it must be said that we thoroughly enjoyed what was a pleasant break from wintry Melbourne and would recommend The Marina as the place to stay in Cairns - if only for the fabulous view from the Horizon Club's Mezzanine floor rooms.

Room Tip: Horizon Club is a MUST.

We got an incredible deal on this hotel - $140 per night including breakfast - and we were upgraded from a garden view to view over the water (esplanade).

RIght from the start the service was great, every member of staff that we encountered during our 3 nights was very friendly and helpful. From reception to bell boy to buffet staff to concierge. They really went out of their way to be informative and welcoming.

The breakfast was great, loved the french toast and omelettes freshly made to order.

The pool is very large and lots of seating around it, it was a little chilly, but so was the weather!

Our room was clean and comfortable, the bathroom was very nice with large corner bath. The room was also quiet which made sleeping very easy.

One of the staff at reception sent up a free plate of homebaked cookies, bowl of fruit and jug of milk with room service to our little girl on our final night, as she had always stopped to say hello to the staff on our way in and out of the hotel. This was a very nice touch from the staff member.

We've stayed at a fair few hotels in cities in Europe, America and Asia and this has to be up in my top two hotels as far as staff go. Well done Shangri-La on attracting and keeping such wonderful and hospitable staff members.

Couldnt fault the property and service. We got a good online deal with 2 complimentary cocktails, free wifi, free massage and free valet parking all for au$175. Upgraded to a marina room for an extra 20 but well worth it. Would gladly stay here again.

Stayed here 2 nights end on May 2012. The room was a garden view, overlooking the park (City side, not marina) on the 2nd floor.

For what is purported to be a Premuim, Luxury, 5 star hotel I found it wanting. The room was large and clean and pleasant.
Ticks were large telly, fridge well away form the bed (bar fridges are shockers for noise) and a large bathroom. King size bed and large lounge, along with a decent desk area.
Non-Ticks was the air conditioning set at 22.5 degress and not able to be adjusted, the bed was a typical King with 2 split mattresses and one side had a major dent in it where Bubba or his mate had been sleeping. Pillows? Bring your own. Choice is of 2; both big and fat, one soft the other hard, Neither condusive to a person wanting a flat pillow and I admit to not asking reception for replacements.
There was also no sheet on the top of the bed; straight into a doona. Little bit hard to deal with with the thought of all those people-germs waiting to get me. A sheet that is washed each room change would be much preferred.

The bathroom was tired; silicone a-plenty, door repainted poorly and the screen door had a domestic cupboard latch on it. None of these detracted from the room but if you want 5 star I don't feel this is it. The water supply and the shower head was 100%; lots of water and a massage head that did just that. Yes Please, and no guilt as the place is full of rain so water is not an issue.
Breakfast was excellent; although you struggle to find the spot as none of the literature tells you where it is (it is in North restuarant, behind Ba8). Plenty of selections in both hot and cold, nice vista overlooking the marina and pleasant staff. Scrambled eggs first day were to die for good; next day were what I normally achieve at home (not to die for). Both good, but I am glad I had them the first day. Coffee from the machine was OK and drinkable.

The pool are is great; simply a HUGE pool with a kids pool and a seperate section that looks like a swim bar. Not heated so be pre-warned for shrinkage.

The sleeping was good, no external noise made it through except for the drunk blokes at 2.30am trying out for some Idol show (fail big time boys).

Wireless and wired (through the same router) internet was free with our deal which is about right in this day and age. Was a tad slow but comparable to a USB modem.

One big beef was the lack of a radio/clock in the room. Wanting to get up early first morning meant using mobile phone. Not cool peeps, please give us clocks.

We found the location pretty good; 2-3 minute walk across the park gets you to the start of the Esplanade food strip and there is variety galore. Although very Surfers Paradise-like with touters out the front from about 4.30pm onwards. Most do a 20% discount for early birds; some do the whole bill, others just the mains but give 25%.

We did get this room on a discount so didn't pay full rate. I think if I did pay full rate this review would be more scathing but for what we got I think it was reasonable.
