For location - walking distance to attractions - this pub is excellent. Staying in the pub is also convenient for meals and social drinks with visiting friends whenever you want. Great place to stay with older children as they can continue to socialise at the pub when you go off to bed. The street noise at night can be a bit distracting on a Friday and Saturday nights - but NO thumping music which is great. Anywhere that you stay in 'The Rocks' on these nights would have a lot of street noise. Very clean rooms - but be sure to book early as the smallest room is indeed a bit small for 2 people. Staff very friendly and obliging. Had meals delivered to our rooms with no fuss and they arrived steaming hot...on a busy bar night. A great experience overall - to stay in a historic beautifully restored pub in the centre of the action!

Room Tip: Book early for a larger room. Friday and Saturday nights are noisier.

Overall I would say the Lord Nelson is a good choice if you’re looking for a budget conscious hotel and don’t need all the amenities/frills of a larger hotel.

We arrived in Sydney after the long flight around 10 am, the hotel was easily found via train and a 15 minute walk. Luckily our room was available, so they were able to check us in right away which was awesome.

The room was tidy and clean which is all I could ask for. A few people have complained about the lack of hair dryer, but all we had to do was ask the office and it was quickly supplied.
Breakfast was served in the brasserie – consisted of cereal, fresh fruit and toast with jam, peanut butter etc and tea or coffee. While not a huge breakfast, it was tasty.

Location was also quite convenient. About a 10-15 minute walk to the Circular Quay area. There is not a ton to see on the way, so it gets a bit repetitive. Really the only complaint is that there also doesn’t appear to be many buses going in and out of the Rocks, so the main option is to walk to Circular Quay and then take a bus from there.

The brewery/pub is also nice. Super packed on Friday/Saturdays which creates a good atmosphere. Food is good for pubfare and the beer is tasty. They are also very strict about the 11 pm closing time. There was a bit of street noise around closing time, but it dissipated quickly. If you’re a light sleeper and in bed before 11 pm it could be something to keep in mind, but not a problem for us.

Overall I would say we enjoyed our stay. Expectations were met, and given the price-point of other hotels, I would say this is a great choice for anyone.

I had booked the room 3 months in advance and was very much looking forward to our stay. We were given a room which was so small we couldn't even put our suitcases on the floor to unpack or store them. There was one tiny window making the room feel stuffy and claustrophobic. The bathroom was large, and I was told by staff to keep my suitcase in their. The TV was at knee height in a hole in the wall. When I complained (this was an ensuite room for $190 per night) I was told that guests were normally informed of the tiny room/bigger bathroom on being booked into this room. I was then asked if I had made a late booking. Neither of these were the case. We then had to waste 2 hours walking around Sydney trying to find alternative accommodation. In the end we found a 2 storey townhouse for only $40 more per night and more room than we could have needed. I think it was room 301 we were allocated at the Lord Nelson, I strongly advise to check you have not been given this room.

We have been to the Lord Nelson a number of times over the years but hadn’t been for 5 years until last month. 5 years ago the food was very hit and miss, we had some disappointing food there which put us off. But now the bar meals seem very much better, plenty of flavour and good portions. However it is the ale that you really come here for as it is from their own brewery and is top quality, I have nearly tried them all now and we have liked everyone of them. There are ales more suited to summer and some more suited to cold winter weather. It is nice to be there in winter when they light the real fire, there aren’t many places in the centre of Sydney that have this kind of old world atmosphere.

If you are going to the Lord Nelson for a bar meal and a few drinks I would advise that you arrive early as this place gets very busy at lunch times and good seats can be hard to find. On Friday and Saturday evenings this places gets packed out and service can be a bit slow. We prefer this place outside of the busiest times, its own popularity can be a problem at certain times.
