Had lunch with a long-standing friend. We agreed that the lunch was nothing special.

I had a very salty broth (I know Niell is a big believer in salt) personally I never add it.

We both had rib-eye steaks. Nothing wrong with them as such, but also nothing to recommend them. The most enjoyable dish was the Brussels sprouts, yes I know, but they were the only thing I could get excited about!

Dessert - we both had the whiskey Creme brûlée, again nothing to get excited about.

Service was pleasant and efficient, but certainly not memorable.

The overall experience was underwhelming. I would go to Guillaume at Bennelong for a special lunch next time.

It's not going to be cheap... save it for a special occasion, but keep in mind... it's not the best setting for a romantic meal for two (I much preferred the Melbourne Rockpool Bat & Grill for that). You might do yourself a favor.... if you are planning to have the steak, and want to do justice to it (deservedly)... you can easily skip the starters, if you have a less than large appetite.
We had the brioche, garlic prawns and oysters to share between 4. All of these were great. Disappointingly, they were out of the David Blackmore wagyu fillets, so we ended up having the sirloin steaks. Which were exquisitely done... but i would have still hoped for better planning on a Friday night. Sides of potato puree, carrots and fries were excellent accompaniments. The wine menu is extensive (a bible, as one of our friends called it), so you should be able to find what you want or have the sommelier suggest something. We rounded up with some awesome salted caramels and sesame chocolate.
All in all, great food in a fantastic ambiance (loved the high ceilings, the old building charm and the open kitchen) with okay service ... be ready to pay the price, if you pick the premium beef cuts - we ended up with a bill of almost $200 per head!

Two colleagues and i visited this restaurant last week, as a venue for a catch-up after a long time. I had booked the restaurant for us, having heard about it for a long time. We were all satisfied with it. We were about 10-15 minutes late after having difficulty locating it. It is situated corner of Bligh and Hunter Streets, easier if they advertise it as such instead of just 66 Hunter St, as the street numbers are hard to locate at night. Our table was given away to other people (drifting in, without calling us first), however, they made amends and found us a table in the corner of the main dining area which i had originally requested as it had appeared in online pictures to have more space for privacy of conversation. Our waiter was French which added to the dining experience. The high ceiling and building has character. Decor was alright. Lights were appropriately dimmed. The food was good, the beef selection (popular) option was explained by the waiter as well as more adequately by an Australian lady who dropped by us to ask if we needed anything. We ordered 2 mains, 1 entree and 1 salad, all to share. The portions of meat were small, but just about adequate, tender and flavoursome. Dessert selected was also good. We had 3 glasses of wine between us. The split bill came to $90 each for the 3 of us, which is reasonable seeing the standard of this place, even though we had 2 main courses only, not 3. I had parked the car at Angel Place, Pitt Street, near Martin Place for $22, this closed at MN, so we left the restaurant around 11.30pm. I would say it is good for special occasions in the CBD.

We regularly try out different restaurants across Sydney and had heard good things about Rockpool so thought we would give it a go but unfortunately it didnt live up to expectations. Dont get me wrong the food was 'good' but definitely not worth the price. Entree's were around the $30 mark whilst mains were around $50.00. I really dont mind paying for a good meal but this just didnt do it for me. The atmosphere was overly pretentious & not relaxing. We didnt even get a dedicated waiter, all up we probably had about 6 different wait staff randomly serving us throughout the night & even then we had to try & catch them as they whizzed past. Wont be back..
