Went here spontaneously for dinner without a reservation (bad idea), so got a seat at the bar (luckily!). Enjoyed the classic steak with fries and sauce along with a beer (great selection) - clear recommendation!

This fascinating space was an absolute mystery. Hidden down several floors underground it is like a Parisian den. Simply brilliant

Our visit on a recent busy night was an experience at both extremes.
First the good bits:
-walk down a couple of flights of stairs to a 1930/40's speakeasy style decore with lots of wood panelling and French prints, stage and much more which gives it a warm feeling and promise of an interesting experience.
-it's very noisy and lively and when we arrived there was a band playing on the stage.
-the food was very good although as a group of 8 we were stuck with the degustation menu...not sure why so many restaurants do this? Anyway, it was a great selection and at $125pp a reasonable price for the range and quality.
-larger groups get a private room which cuts down the background noise considerably

The bits that soured our experience:
-when the dishes arrived there was little or no explanation of what they were, how they were prepared and the ingredients used. For a top tier resturant the table service fell well short of its competitors in this space
-the drinks bill was huge at $100pp and for 3 bottles of modest quality wine, a pre dinner drink ( none top shelf) and mineral water that kept flowing whether we asked for it or not, it made the meal very expensive and soured the overall experience
-the customer service was indifferent and not what we normally experience at similar establishments
-they don't take bookings on busy nights and wait times can be an hour or two unless you arrive very early, or late. However, they do take bookings for larger groups although you need to push hard to get the right time slots as they seem to want to do double covers for private rooms.

Great atmosphere that takes me back to a time in a bistro in Paris. The food was amazing! The live singing was a special touch and the service was fantastic with food served very timely.

The flavours are very interesting, with the snail having an Asian twist being xo sauce based and surprising tasting when dipped with bread. The abalone was mixed with ham and surprising also very tasty!

The steak was a highlight, cooked perfectly with the taste of charcoal.

The melon desert was amazingly refreshing after a big French meal.

Its a wonderful atmopshere, beautiful dark wood everywhere, vibrant interesting music which is not intrusive. Its not often that you put food into your mouth and your focus is drawn completely away from your friends and the conversation. All four of us had that "wow" moment. Almost emotional, food evoking all sorts of memories. The sauce in the clams was extraordinary, the pate, the beef, even the butter.
Its pricey, so for most this is to reserve for a very special night.
And very sepcial it is.
