“A relaxing retreat in a hobbit house”
Reviewed 22 September 2014 for a stay in August 2014

La Coqueta is a lovely holiday retreat if you want to explore the Spanish countryside by car or just chill by the pool every day. The house has all the basic amenities, (but not much room for food storage and the freezer compartment doesn't store much food or ice creams / lollies for the children.) We did venture to the coast and water park a couple of times but we found the 2 - 3 hour round trip journey quite tiresome and costly and the beaches this year were filthy, with the exception of Burriana, near Neja. We loved El Chorro and Torcal was stunning. It's the first holiday where we have spent more days around the pool than visiting places though due to the location, as it quite clearly states you definitely need a car! The motorway system around the area is good but take a map anyway. The children where fed up of the travelling by the end of the two weeks.
There are local walks and Gavin did try a couple of runs on the hills, but access is an issue and most walks end up following the roads, which wasn't what we had expected.
The olive groves surrounding the area are beautiful and the house itself is very quirky and endearing. We cooked on the bbq every night which was great as the fresh food in Spain tastes so much nicer than the food back home. Our advise would be to not eat until after 9pm or until the sun is setting as there were hundreds of flies during the day. Maybe a bug zapper outside would help alleviate the problem? The swallows and bats helped out though and it was lovely watching them as the sun was setting. The skies are so clear in the evenings that we also saw shooting stars and played spot the satellite game.
Gavin and I had both said that we would go back to La Coqueta to use as a base for sight seeing in future years but without the children as we felt there just wasn't enough to interest them in this area. (Children aged 12 & 10.)
Thank you for sharing La Coqueta.
