We'd had several restaurants suggested to us in Casuarina but the cold, wet night felt like Italian food to us, warmth, good service and good wine and food were to follow. Osteria has an interesting feel to it, part cosy restaurant, part v casual, part warehouse style modern - and would fit easily into a Melbourne or Sydney scene. The menu was quite extensive with many choices - but we wanted a simple quality Italian meal. We like to opt for something simple but classic when visiting a new place for the first time to see how it stacks up and weren't disappointed when we shared a wonderful pizza and pasta. The pasta at Osteria is hand rolled and our choice came with tomatoes, olives parmesan, lemon wedge, olive oil and house made salsa verde. Our pizza choice was superb - a thin crusty base (why do so many places get this wrong - not here!) Billinudgel salami, garlic, ricotta, and garden herbs. Accompany this with a classic Chianti (him) and an Italian Pinot Grigio (her) and it was a perfect meal. Add to this excellent service, lively music and chatter from the bar that never overwhelmed, and... believe it or not Italian lessons in the toilets! Perfect really.
Be aware week nights vary - one is shared plates, one 'soup night', one a set menu, so check.
