“overpriced but very warm and welcoming”
Reviewed 30 October 2011

We came just for a meal in the restaurant. Very friendly landlord and staff and the place lovely. The place was warm with a lovely log fire

The food was nicely presented but only average. It was vastly overpriced. Didn't like the way the table was laid with the knives pointing outwards! just needs a little more attention to detail.

Regardless of the above we had a very nice evening and there was a lovely atmosphere.

“VERY WELCOMING”
Reviewed 20 October 2011

We have just returned home from a lovely autumn day in the Forest of Dean. We had no definite plans, except to find a decent pub lunch. The welcome we received in the Hostelrie will be long remembered. The sausage and mash was terrific. Thank you.

“avoid the food”
Reviewed 26 August 2011

Me and my husband had a couple of child free nights away during the Easter break. We decided to try the Hostelrie for an evening meal and do I wish we hadn't bothered! We sat in the lounge area and if it wasnt a battle with the flies it was a dog that kept hovering by the table. I ordered a mozarella, pine nut and sunblushed tomato tarte tatin for starter, my husband a spicy chicken salad. The tart was pine nut free, not mozarella and a slice of bog standard tomato on top. Terribly bitter, looked awful and when I questioned this I got 'the chef sends his apologies!' The salad was out of a bag, chicken plonked on the top and a dollop of a jarred sauce dropped on top. We had the beer battered fish and chips for main and that was just as bad.We filled the tartare sauce pot with the bones I extracted from the fish which totally put me off.
Didnt bother to order a sweet, just got up and walked out.
I did get the feeling that the woman who was serving behind the bar cooked the meal as she mysteriously disappeared as soon as restaurant opened. Not impressed at all.

“Mouldy bread sandwich!”
Reviewed 15 August 2011

Great spot next to Goodrich castle. Initial warm welcome dissolved into confusion as the landlord hashed our order. Discovered the beer garden to be a well used dogs toilet and had to clean poo from my sons shoe. Food arrived which turned out to be another tables, and the landlord was not apologetic, merely harsh with his young staff. The food was fair, though the much trumpeted caramelised onion and sausage sandwich was perfectly average, with barely cooked and certainly not caramelised onions. It was then we discovered that a prawn sandwich had blue mould on it. I took it back to the staff who seemed thoroughly embarrased. A request for the loo was met with a glare. All in all a very poor place overseen by a terrifying landlord who was rather full of himself. We would neither return or recommend it.

“A perfect country inn, with the warmest welcome EVER!”
Reviewed 1 July 2011

I can't recommend this place enough. We discovered the place almost by accident after getting a bit lost while walking, and were so glad we did. The landlord Alun and his other half Lisa were immediately welcoming, even offering to re-open the kitchens just for our party of five. We partook of a great selection of local beers and ciders while we were waiting, and then the meal itself was something else! Large protions, great quality local produce (the sausages are legendary), and all well cooked. It also came with a good selection of chutneys from Alun's own recipes. We were so happy we were back there for lunch the next day.
