We set off to drive from Carmel through Big Sur bound for Hearst Castle. We had to turn back after about 15km. Above-average rain has closed California’s coastal Highway 1 in several places roughly between Ragged Point and Carmel.

We have read that Pfeiffer Canyon Bridge in Big Sur had been damaged has started sinking into the shifting mountainside. Current word is that it’s beyond repair and can take a year to fix and open the road.

They're saying you can access Big Sur from LA but you'd have to drive in and out. No through to Carmel/Monterrey.

Camp here if you have no other options. Pickings can be slim in this area. The campsites are close together and windy. There is no access to the beach or hiking trails. Once you are here there is really no where to go.

We took the Sunday lighthouse tour on a sunny windy day. Our volunteer guide was excellent. She took her time telling us about the plants and geology as we made our way up the hill toward the lighthouse, on the sheltered leeward side. The views were excellent, though it was too windy to see the whales.
Check their website for dates and times of tours - and go a bit early to be sure of getting in. First come, first served.

The gorgeous vistas of Big Sur will pull you in! Make sure to have a camera on hand because with the beautiful emerald blue Pacific Ocean on one side and the majestic pine trees on the other you'll grab some great pictures. Before you start your drive into Big Sur be sure to pack your lunch because you won't find a lot of places to stop and eat.

The Point Sur State Park, featuring the historic Point Sur Lightfhouse, is unlike any other place in the world that is open to the public. It sits on a 350' rock, jutting out into the Pacific Ocean, in one of the most scenic locations in California. Getting there is half the fun, and returning at about sunset along State Route 1 is a spiritual experience. There are scheduled tours for fairly small groups and the docents are well versed in the history of the facility. The views, when it's clear, are magnificent, and even when it's foggy (which is a lot of the time), it's still breathtaking. Highly recommended!
