Fieldwork Riotinto is run by geologists and an historian, which enables it to provide a unique insight into this extraordinary landscape. I honestly don't know how they managed to communicate so much of their deep knowledge, given the limitations of my Spanish.

Fieldwork Riotinto offers scheduled tours at very competitive prices, including: the lost villages of Rio Tinto, the British legacy, a history of mining in Rio Tinto with visits to the main sites, an exploration of the river and a full-day examining the impact of human activity on the landscape. OK, a tour about the development of sport, especially football, is also available.

It also provides tailor-made activities for individuals or your own group, which is what we did. I couldn't have been more impressed by how committed Gregorio and Paco were, how friendly, knowledgeable and utterly reliable.

Our experience exceeded expectations and I cannot recommend Fieldwork Riotinto highly enough - but you will need to have some Spanish.

Fieldwork's routes are a stunning mix of geological detail, historical site and, quite simply, a great ramble through one of the strangest and most surprising landscapes Andalucia has to offer. Ask them to take you over the world's biggest slag heap, the view's not bad, and then to the rainbow-coloured open pit that inspired a movie (and a popular revolt a century before).

Whether you're curious to hear more about the British Empire -- yup, it was this close to home -- or about gold deposits, NASA research and plants that thrive in acid, Fieldwork are the tourguides for you.

The local Sierra produces Spain's best jamon to boot.
