Crystal Creek Rainforest Retreat
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 30 December 2017

Wasn't sure what I was signing up for, but this place is truly breathtaking, and so much more than what I could have imagined. A perfect combination of the secluded beauty of the Gold Coast hinterland and the luxurious accommodation, purpose built to be completely submerged in the divine beauty of nature that surrounded, Crystal Creek Rainforest Retreat is a must visit place for all who want to enjoy the world heritage Australian rainforests. I was here with my wife for our 10th marriage anniversary and stayed two nights, and we were both in awe of the surroundings, spent a lot of time just enjoying the clouds coming in through the trees as the tropical rain interrupted the many walks available around the accommodation. I would highly recommend this retreat if you want to disconnect from the craziness from your everyday life and enjoy a few days appreciating the breath-taking world we live in. Mark, Stephan and Kathryn were fantastic hosts and made sure that we had everything we needed to make the stay memorable. 10/10

A perfect private and secluded retreat. We spent 3 days and came away totally refreshed. Will definately go back. Our retreat was perfectly presented. The spa has a floor to ceiling vista window overlooking the rainforest just outside the window. There is a central pavillion with hundreds of videos that can be taken back to the villa. A pool table is for use anytime.
A multitude of walks into the rainforest are easily accessed from easy to strenous. Crystal clear swimming holes are also near to ease the aching muscles

This place is very special. My partner and I go here to reconnect, and to escape everyday life.... It’s nothing short of magical and serene.

The accommodations are simply luxury and really do not pack much because I doubt you will wear anything other than the robe provided. Take some hiking shoes if you feel up for a walk on one of their hiking tracks..

Or simply just lounge by your private pool over looking or looking into the rainforest.

All food from breakfast, lunch and dinner is provided. You will order your food before arriving at the retreat via phone.

There is also massages available. Pre nook these before you arrive that way you wont be disappointed-if you cant get a booking at last minute.

This beautiful hideaway will regenerate you, it will refuel your senses and leave you feeling 110% better than when you arrived.

This is PARADISE!!

We enjoyed a two night stay in November 2017 and absolutely LOVED it! The location is absolutely stunning with the backdrop of a beautiful mountain ridge covered in lush bush and the amazing adjoining rain forest. WE stayed in the Byron Lodge and it is amazing! Tastefully and beautifully fitted out, including marble and quality fittings in the ‘bathroom’ (a beautiful space including a large free standing two person spa bath and a shower with two shower heads, one large ceiling mounted water fall effect shower head and the other a detachable wall mounted shower head and there’s plenty of water pressure to enjoy both together), marble and a separate and private Japanese bidet / toilet. There is ample space, high ceilings and amazing views out of the multitude of ceiling to floor windows. The kitchen is well equipped, including a Nespresso pod machine (pods supplied) and a two way log fired located between the living area and bedroom is a nice touch. The lodge has central heading / cooling (floor outlets), loads of charm and charming lighting, candles and multiple tee lights are supplied. It’s simply stunning at nights. The lodge opens out to a huge deck through two very large slide away doors to the front of the lodge and one to the side, which opens to a BBQ. In addition to the BBQ, the deck includes a small two person dining suite, a large corner outdoor lounge and best of all a gorgeous infinity plunge pool (solar heated). The property has multiple walks to enjoy from easy to moderate to intense. We did the rainforest walk of around 50 minutes which was something else! Thoroughly recommend.

There were a couple of slightly disappointing things to note.
The bedding – despite the gorgeous large king size bed, the bedding itself was very disappointing. I was expecting at least 1,000 thread count cotton with feather down duvet and pillows, all very fresh and crisp, which is standard in high end accommodation these days (we travel extensively and this has been our experience). However, the bedding in the lodge was more akin to a roadside motel, well worn and I found myself wishing I’d taken my own pillow as the pillows were well used and cheap acrylic stuffing of some sort.

The breakfast hamper – again, we’ve stayed in many similar types / standard of accommodation, most of which included a breakfast basket in their accommodation cost. Normally breakfast baskets include deliciously fresh and home made muffins, pastries, etc, fresh fruit and fresh fruit juice as an absolute minimum. However, the breakfast hampers (and there is a choice, all of which we understand are put together on site) are very basic. No sign of any fresh baked goods, instead the accompanying bread, English muffins or crumpets didn’t seem particularly fresh ( we guessed had been retrieved from a freezer). No fruit what so ever and no fruit juice (although it was possible to order fruit juice for an additional cost).

Although two relatively minor complaints, we think Crystal Creek could do better given their rates.

Never the less, we had a wonderful stay and found the staff very friendly. Thank you very much!

Dear Donna,
We are glad that you enjoyed your stay overall. Crystal Creek Rainforest Retreat is genuinely located in the rainforest. Many other retreats all over Australia and beyond, may say they are located in the rainforest but the truth is; very few of them are genuinely located in the rainforest. There are less than a handful of these in Australia. We acknowledge your desire for crisp and fresh linen and we have tried stocking 100% natural linen and feather duvets in the past. The issue was that in the rainforest we have periods of very high humidity and cotton in particular absorbs a lot of moisture from the air; so no matter how crisp and fresh it is in the laundry. It soon becomes limp and damp. Feathers in pillows or duvets quickly do the same and they become damp and mouldy. So neither of these products can be used in any true rainforest environment. All of our beds have 4 pillows, two of which are very high quality pure latex pin core pillows and the other two are purposely chosen to be soft, for people who may want that and are also of high quality.

The gourmet meals at this romantic retreat are served and delivered in an informal way, to allow guests, the luxury to create their own timetable so they can enjoy a private and convenient dinning experience.

Our meals are delivered in such a way as to allow guests to decide their own meal times, from late afternoon to late at night; you don't have to stress to meet a timeline, you don't have to dress for dinner, meals are unhurried and in the private setting of your own bungalow at your leisure. You will not be confronted by other people, staff or guests - we are, after all, a retreat with the emphases on couples spending quality, private and uninterrupted time with each other.

With best wishes Mark van Renen

All the meals, breakfasts, lunches and dinners are delivered between 1-4 pm. In the gourmet dinner range, these are fully cooked, served in ceramic terrines and put into your fridge, with all the condiments, breads, salads, desserts etc and are ready to heat and serve at your leisure.

We stayed in the Springbrook Mountain View Lodge back in April for our honeymoon. Just walking through the door and taking in the view as well as the lodge was a magical experience. It was honestly the most breathtaking sight and we really enjoyed sitting on our balcony just watching the birds and the rainforest. As soon as we were there we decided we had to return, as we don't know if it can get any better than this. What prompted me to write the review is us planning our return trip for our anniversary!

We barely saw any other couples, but when we did it was just in brief passing on the hikes or in the games room. We made good use of the ping pong table which encouraged us to buy one ourselves! The DVD library is massive and we really enjoyed making our way through the Jurassic Park movies as we felt like we were surrounded by similar scenery.

The extra luxuries were very much appreciated and we loved taking the goodies home as keepsakes! Each night we lit candles throughout the lodge, creating a romantic and peaceful atmosphere. Unfortunately our champagne flutes shattered before we were able to pack them though, so I doubt they would have made the trip home to Melbourne.

The food was amazing and more than enough. We are big eaters and were able to eat leftovers for lunch each day. The crumpets with stewed rhubarb were a huge hit. When returning, we don't think we'll do the picnic again. Nothing was bad about it, but didn't feel needed with all the food we had and our amazing view.

Only problems we had:

-the power went out for a few hours one day. It was incredibly hot in the lodge without air conditioning as the sun beats through the windows. I was especially worried about the food that had just been delivered to our fridge. We had to call a few times due to (understandably) bad reception to be told they weren't sure why/when it would go back on. We ended up going into town for a bit but hadn't planned to do that, nor really enjoyed it. This wasn't something that could have been helped considering the location, but did dampen my spirits that day.

-when taking a bath there were gritty bits. We discovered these were small parts chipping off the bath.

-we had a poor bird fly full force into a window (understandably), giving us a huge fright with the noise. We were quite worried about it as it stayed on our deck for awhile. I put some water out and a couple of hours later it had disappeared. Not really much to do here as putting markings on the windows would take away from the view. But i imagine this happens quite often and feel for the poor birds!

-there were times when our lodge shook. My husband barely noticed it at first, until I pointed out our towels swaying. Didn't bother us but we did wonder what it was as it would happen 3-4 times daily. When we asked the ranger at check out they hadn't heard of it happening before and suggested it might have been landslides.

Overall, an absolutely amazing experience. The problems we had were barely noticeable as we felt we were in the most amazing place. Can't wait to return!
