Osteria Madama la Barbera was suggested to us by a local when we asked for a place that has great local dishes and good seafood. The restaurant is located on the side of a plaza close to the Town Hall of Asti. We sat outside, as is was a very nice and warm July evening. We felt the local relaxed and happy atmosphere that was created by the location and especially the very nice staff.

We had two courses in the restaurant. For the starter we had one aubergine dish. The dish itself looked very simple but it tasted delicious! The texture and the flavours were spot on. The other starter was a pasta carbonara which also was very tasty. For the main course we took the seafood platter that had different kinds of octopus and vegetables in it. It was one of the best seafood dishes we have eaten, as all the ingredients were fresh and delicious and the dish was not ruined with any sauces or too much seasoning. Simplicity was the keyword.

If you want to have delicious food and good service in an authentic atmosphere, this is the place.

Looking for a restaurant that was open in San Damiano, we stumbled across Madama la Barbera's modestly signposted Osteria, walked in and grabbed the last table available. No menu and only a choice of wine by the glass. Six courses, but reasonably sized and all very good indeed. Simple but well executed and good value!

A charming town, San Damiano d'Asti, with the perfect local restaurant right in the main piazza! Chef Mario cooks up delicious local dishes; their local Barbera d'Asti wine is delicious and reasonable and Susanna, Mario's wife and co-owner is a complete delight!

We had so much fun chatting away in Italian that we're going back again tonight! Such a warm and welcoming reception is why one travels to Italy!

Hidden in the corner of the Piazza Liberta is one of the best typical Piedmontese restaurants we have eaten at. Only five tables and a limited menu but----wow---what great cooking. We had the fettuccini with sausage and it was the best we have had in four years of trips to this area. It was followed by veal Milanese with fried cauliflower which was excellent. Unfortunately we were too full for dessert.

All this plus wine for 40 Euros make for a great price/value ratio. This is exactly what your local Osteria should be like and so seldom is. We will be back and probably more than just once!
