“Wine tour and tasting of Castello di Volpaia”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 May 2010

I highly recommend the wine tour and wine tasting in Volpaia/Castello di Volpaia. It is a unique and charming setting with a cluster of medieval stone houses and buildings housing the various stages of wine production and cellar storage. We have visited many wineries in various countries and found this one fascinating as well as an overall pleasurable experience. it is necessary to make reservations ahead of time and there is a fee. Our hostess Alesandra Marton was a delight and we enjoyed a lovely lunch ahead of time in the Osteria il Tocco. [----]

“Excellent cooking class - we love Giovanella”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 March 2010

Although it was early in the season, Giovanella was gracious enough to give us the cooking class one-on-one. She was so helpful and the class was the highlight of our trip in Tuscany. After preparing all the food, Giovanella took us on a tour of the winery and the olive oil factory. Everything was so beautiful. The icing on the cake was the long leisurely lunch we shared with Giovanella while sampling a host of Volpaia's different wines in her dining room. We would highly recommend the class to everyone!

“Wonderful day in beautiful Tuscany!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 September 2009

We had a fantastic week exploring the beautiful Tuscan countryside. We enjoyed everything about it & crammed such a lot into our stay. Our favourite day though combined a trip to beautiful San Gimignano in the morning with a visit & tour around Volpaia in the afternoon.
They had just started to harvest the grapes & Roberta, our guide, was brilliant ,explaining how everything worked from the Olive Oil harvest to the wine aging process etc. We ended our tour through this lovely village & winery with a tasting of the excellent wines accompanied with bruschetta & cheese. It was perfect.
We returned one evening for dinner in one of the 2 restaurants , after drinks at Bar Ucci (so friendly) had dinner overlooking the hills - another lovely evening. Would certainly recommend

“Best winery tour in Tuscany”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 April 2009

I've visited plenty of wineries in the new world (Napa) and in the Old wolrd (especially France) but nothing has ever been close to the experience of Volpaia. This flly restored middle ages village hosts the most incredible cellars. Divided in different buildings of the old town you pass from a 12th century curch where it's located the vinification cellar to the old noble house where you find the aging facilities. Volpaia also has an olive crusher and a vinegar making facility (we didn't visit this last one). Price is higher than others (around 15 euros) but it's worth every penny of it. We visited the cellars the olive crushing facility (it was working in November and the oil was unbelievable) and had a full tasting of the wines accompanied by bruschetta and pecorino cheese.

“Lovely stay”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 February 2008

My husband and I have stayed in Volpaia the last 2 years, and are looking forward to our return visit in September.

That time of year, the village is bustling with grape harvest and wine production. What a joy to "live for a few days" amidst all the activity. The surrounding countryside is beginning to show fall colors, it is beautiful.

We have stayed in apartments (Torniello & Coltassala) and have used our stay in the village as a hub for traveling the hilltowns, very conveinent access to Sienna, Montalcino and Montalpulciano, Pienza, San Gim, Volterra and even did a day trip to Assisi from Volpaia.

We traveled the short drive to Radda & the new COOP for breakfast provisions. Did lunches on our adventures, and then settled into the village for the evening. Bruschetta and wine at Bar-Ucci, Paola's place; then dinner at either her sister's (Carla)lovely La Botegga or the Osteria (part of the Winery's operation) .It is a most delightful time spent on the deck at Bar-Ucci, being part of village life.

Highlight of our stay, besides walking among the vineyards, and the countryside, was the "cookery class" with Giovanella, owner of Volpaia's winery. Several course lunch that we (6 of us) fixed, and served with the fruit of the local vines, including the Vin Santo. A most memorable experience; Giovanella is not just a wonderful businesswoman, chef/teacher, but a delightful woman. We had a few exta moments getting to know her due to our "classmates" getting lost on the way from where they were staying. And we had a lovely tour of the winery's operation and the Olive oil production area.

We are counting the days for our return visit in September.
