“Magic get away with the family, romantic stay, slowing down, recharge”
Reviewed 13 July 2016 for a stay in June 2016

this nice rural villa is the perfect get away which I can recommend for virtually all types of parties... maybe as an exception the families who prefer to go with their Ferrari to a 5 star hotel in Marbella... in fact the Ferrari won't easily get to the villa but my Renault Megane easily found the place.

We came for a week during June with the extended family, some of them whom we hadn't seen for a while, so this was the nice place where we could all reunite, and recharge our batteries.

It's just amazing how centuries ago this villa was built in the river, and how the pleasant owner, Frank, has brought this place up to standards for a nice and pleasant stay.
It's a large villa, abundantly equipped, and especially the terrace served as the perfect place for our evening barbeques while the kids were running and playing at the terrace below, and our small kids safely at the upper terrace around us with no place to go so we could just relax, laugh and enjoy the family time.

The beds are good, quiet, a real place to sit back, many break-out places to chill, and the perfect place for a nice walk.

Also the restaurants we went to were to be recommended but I can't recall their names, we went with Frank's recommendation and that turned out perfect.

Marco

Hi Marco, thanks for your nice review. Always good to know that our guests choose the right house and enjoyed their holidays. As you indicate, a unique place to wind down and meet with friends and family. many places to visit in the surroundings... the last km access is by sand road and indeed not suitable for very low sports cars.. but than again, like my grandpa said, dont look for paradise along the motorway ;-). Looking forward to welcoming you back to the mill !!

“Old watermill with rustic charm”
Reviewed 23 May 2015 for a stay in May 2015

We rent this place fort one week in May and were just two people and two dogs instead of the possible 14 people. Renting an old watermill we did not expect a luxury home but a reasonable level of comfort. Our experience is a bit of a mixed bag as follows.
When we arrived after 6pm in the evening, the house wasn’t ready yet. The owner greeted us warmly and offered to enjoy a bottle of wine and a cold beer until the house would be ready. This was nice although after 8 hours in the car we had preferred to take a shower instead. So we also used the time to get introduced to some features of the house.
Let me start with the positives. If you love nature and the sound of running water this is the right place for you. Its very secluded and you are on your own. Once the natural pool is cleaned and warmed up – May is definitely too early – it will offer a nice chill in clean water during the hot summer days. The river water seems to be very clean as we saw several grayfish during our stay. You can take nice walks right from the mill and meet cows and horses on the way. Except for the worn appearance of the lower floor kitchen and bathroom the house was clean and towels and linen were clean and fresh. The bedrooms and baths on the upper floor are simple but cosy and tidy as well. We used only two rooms but they all looked equally nice. This is a nice and affordable place for large groups or families who get along with basic comfort and enjoy the outdoors. Our dogs also enjoyed the running water and the closed backyard. I could not recommend the place to a family with small children as the surrounding outdoors are not safe for small kids and would require constant supervision.
On the other hand this place could benefit from some improvements to make ones stay more agreeable. As mentioned on the web page the water from the tab is not potable. The owner provided a tank on the kitchen countertop and some plastic bottles instead. It was enough for the two of us but with 14 people I wonder how often it had to be refilled – and by whom?
The request to throw your toilet paper into an open bin next to the toilet bowl is something we found quite disgusting. The reason being the septic system which can not handle the paper. At home we live in the middle of vineyards without connection to the public sewage system and our septic system has no problems handling regular toilet paper. I guess there could be better solutions.
The kitchen on the lower floor is very, very basic and could do with some renovation. There is no stove but just a gas range. The ceramic sinks are worn and as such cannot be cleaned properly. There is a washing machine and a dishwasher underneath the otherwise open cupboards. You also have to store away anything which could attract mice as we found their traces on the countertops in the morning. There is no coffee machine just a pot that needs to be heated up on the range. Fortunately we brought our own coffee maker and just used the kitchen for making coffee and tea. There are good restaurants in the surrounding area.
Another issue to be aware of is the long driveway to the house. In many places it is so eroded that a normal, fully loaded passenger car will have difficulties to get to the place. We had a SUV and hence no problems. Forget to bring your convertible sports car.
Summing up, this is a simple location for nature lovers. We had to tune down our expectations and will not return but it can be just right for others who like this rustic style.

Dear Birgit, I must say I was very much surprised when I read your review. You arrived half an hour early and you complain the house was not ready... Bedrooms and bathrooms were clean and ready for use, so instead of having a welcome drink with me on the terrace, you could have taken this shower instead... Your comments about the coffee pot, water, toilets and basic kitchen, make me wonder if you read the description of the house and its facilities before booking. The watermill is located on the banks of the river Lozoya, main source of drinking water for Madrid. A unique spot surrounded by water and nature, but with some restrictions concerning the use and treatment of water. This implies that we cannot use chemicals and we cannot throw toilet paper in the toilets! So if drinking water from the tap and depositing toilet paper in the toilets are priority for you... while the views on the river, waterfall and natural surroundings are secondary, than yes, you should NOT rent this home. Concerning the kitchen, there is a gas stove with 4 burners, a fridge-freezer, dishwasher, washing machine, microwave, oven, toaster, juicer and mixer...There is also a "gas ring" for making paella and on the terrace a big barbecue.. The basic coffee pot is in fact a coffee percolator, used by 80% of the Spanish people and it makes an excellent espresso coffee... I am not saying that this is luxury, but its how it is and how it is described on the web. Now, I am very happy to learn that your 2 black Labrador dogs had a great time, but unfortunately they did not write the review :-)

To our future guests, the watermill is a unique holiday home. Off the beaten track and situated on a unique spot. Its a historic building with a lot of authentic charm... but like the proverb says, beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder, and if after seeing the photographs and reading the description on the web you still have doubts about the house and its facilities, please do not hesitate to contact us.. It's a pleasure to provide you with additional information, and if you decide this is not the ideal holiday home for you, we´d be delighted to recommend you alternatives which suit better your personal wishes and demands.
Looking forward to meeting you. Frank
