Hotel is located about 50 minutes away from the Kona airport. Stayed two nights. At check in I was offered fresh juice. Room was very spacious. The beach at the hotel was well taken care of. Had breakfast buffet at Manta and thought the selection of food/fruits was decent. Dinner at Manta was somewhat disappointing. Food was okay, but the server kept asking about pairing dinner with wine when I had already told her I was not interested in any alcoholic beverages for the evening. I declined the first time, and when I was asked about having wine the third time I really could not enjoy the food anymore.

I felt like the hotel was very quiet, private place. always plenty of empty chairs on the beach. the open design of the hotel allowed cool breeze to come throughout the day.

This hotel stay can be used to earn Marriott or Prince Preferred points (choose one or the other depending on which points matter the most to your travel needs).

Overall beautiful property, recommend for anyone looking for a quiet vacation.

What an amazing hotel; we had a terrific room (802) with a great view of the beach, the spaces outside the rooms are mostly open air, there is large art throughout, the grounds and hotel are very well kept, the beach and facilities on the beach are top tier, there is a real 24hr gym, and the hotel is so large you just feel like you have more space. The staff was helpful we never had to wait for anything.
Tips: The reefs on both sides of the bay are good for snorkeling, you can probably see the mantas from shore at night, the guest wifi was included and worked well in our room, get the printed paper at the desk every day as events and some onsite restaurant schedules change daily, and be sure to check out the number 3 restaurant for lunch - it was our favorite. We are planning a return trip.

Room Tip: Beach side is great, save some money on the golf side

We spent 5 nights at the Mauna Kea in the beginning of May. Upon checkin, we were upgraded to an ocean view (though with double beds, rather than a king bed). The view was AMAZING in room 636. The hotel is a bit older, with a mid-century modern vibe. The setting is absolutely fantastic, gorgeous grounds and landscaping on one of the best beaches on the Big Island. One of my favorite parts of the resort are all the isolated sitting areas so that you can have a picnic lunch or curl up with a good book in a variety of settings - some quite private. The sunsets on the beach were second to none. We did not experience any of the issues that others did with folks lining up for beach chairs early in the morning. In fact, it seemed so un-crowded that I asked the front desk about their current capacity which was at 70%. The dining options were good - we were not fans of the beach restaurant but loved Copper bar and Manta. We considered booking the Manta Ray snorkel but observed the snorkel from the rocky outpost above and then swam with the Manta Rays in the same area during the day.

We found the staff welcoming and accommodating at all times. Valet parking was very convenient and fast. We did not use the spa but will next time.

Honestly, the Big Island is not our favorite Hawaiian Island but we would HAPPILY return just to stay at the Mauna Kea.

One of the best beaches in the world. Older classic hotel that has been kept up very well. Restaurants are excellent, golf course is great, service is exceptional, and the prices are well pricey but welcome to Hawaii. Love ya orange:) will see you again.

When I found out that the Mauna Kea resort was the oldest resort hotel on the island of Hawaii, it made perfect sense. The property it is built on is the best piece of land for a resort hotel that I can imagine.

The beach is perfect. It is a long stretch of sand on a beautiful bay. The sand goes out hundreds of feet into the ocean. There are waives, but not too strong. There is coral along the edges of the bay where you can snorkel.

The staff puts out as many beach chairs and umbrellas as the guests need. There is a restaurant/bar at the beach where you can order lunch or drinks, although you are not supposed to bring alcoholic drinks onto the beach itself.

We had a ocean view on the top floor. It was spectacular. There was a nice balcony with 2 padded chairs and a foot stool.

The bathroom was spacious. There were 2 sinks separated from the toilet and tub/shower. The only negative was that the tub is abnormally high. I could see someone falling getting into or out of the tub/shower.

The restaurant was very good. Dinner was better than breakfast, which was primarily a very expensive but complete buffet.

We would definitely return to Mauna Kea resort.

Room Tip: Get a ocean view on a high floor
